Some years ago I decided to see just how low I could go with a charge in the 44-40. I was using a bunch of cast bullets I think they were 230grains, resized from .430 to .427, no gas check. I got down to less than 2 grains of bullseye before they stuck in the bore. I was using a '92 Winchester. Test loads were fired into end grain pine, and even when very close to sticking in the bore, were still going several inches into the pine at ten feet. The loads were not useful for hunting, but interesting in what can be accomplished. I should have chronographed them.
