FYI, I don't know if this was an isolated incident and I may not have been told an important detail... But leaving the country and keeping a handgun in Canada may not be an option any more.
I was contacted by a person who left to live overseas. He left his guns in storage in Ontario. His license was still valid but the registrar told him they will be expiring his registration certificates because he is not a Canadian resident any more.
Ended up taking his guns into the business registry and after getting the export/import permits sent the guns to him overseas. Point is that while one can maintain a license while not being a resident, there seems to now be boundaries to having registered handguns.
Double check this if it's something you are planning. Storage with a business may be the only option to leave a handgun in Canada (registered to them)
