Moving targets?

I have been thinking that I would like to at least attempt to learn how to shoot at a moving silhouette with a handgun. Even slow zombies might move around so I want to be prepared.

My gun club has no setup for this.

So I start thinking how I could improvise something. Visions of clothesline, pullys, remote controlled cars, rolling tires and a heap of other wacky and expensive ideas spring to mind.

Then I think that maybe someone on CGN has already figured out the solution to my problem and that CGN advice could save me some problems and expense.

Anyone got any idea's

I can't offer a solution, but I can tell you to keep in mind that anything (anything!) that lives downrange will get shot.

So something that can either survive it, or can take it and not cause you to weep from the wasted effort is in order...

we have a system at Abby on the indoor that DFO uses for lateral movement. for targets charging you there are numerous ways of doing it. But for pistol stuff I'd be more concerned with practicing shooting on the move than targets on the move, those are pretty easy really (cept that fast mover they had at the Ont. Provincials recently)

Re: Shooting on the move---I am no expert, but you could try holding a small bottle of water half full as if it were a pistol, and try moving from one box to another, all the while keeping the water as calm as possible, and up on a target. Also remember that shooting on the move at targets farther than 10m it may be better to just pause and shoot it. I was told anything up close like 3-7m is better for shooting on the move, anything farther than that you may get crappy hits or misses.

Moving targets like swingers I sometimes engage them where they pause to change directions, and sometimes I just spray a few quick rounds moving my upper body, not my arms. There are different ways to do it of course. If it is going that fast, I would hopefully have the mind to just spray a few quick shots and keep moving.

Targets on a moving platform, (like a clothes line/ rail set-up) I have been told to lead them just slightly, close to the leading line of the A zone.

We have a nice rigg at our club , using a tightwire guide line and a variety of wood silhouette targets that attach to a wood and steel frame on pullies, shot at 40 yds. lots of fun.

17yds is apparently the max distance to effectively engage targets while you are moving. According to Todd Jarret at least.

don,t laugh to hard but i might be in the process of making up a moving target by using a remote control truck like the one,s at walmart. attach a small wood frame and get it a couple of feet above it. have a buddy drive it you can practice indoors or outdoors and have it go in any direction.

i'm not laughing. just make sure you post some pics so we can all enjoy the lunacy....... and then build our own contraptions to shoot at!!! my luck would be 180 grains of love through the motor on the first shot and the fun would be over....lol

nothing crazy about that at all, but you have to consider how much resistance a target creates, as well as the center of gravity being raised that high. you'd need a remote truck with a fairly wide wheel base.
some versions I've seen use the track for rolling doors, laid down on the ground, usually attached to plywood or something, and then the rollers on the target and it's pulled toward or away either by another person, or a motor. you can also use the same setup for side to side.

Thanks for the input guys. Keep the suggestions, coming.

It's not really for serious shooting, just glorified plinking with a hint of undead survival.

I do remember someone on here( I thought it was on here anyway, it's the only shooting forum I frequent) mentioning shooting helium baloons towed by a RC vehicle so thats what gave me that idea. I think the key to this being sucessful would be a very cheap rc vehicle, cause sooner or later the thing would eat a bullet.

And years ago I tried something I read about, probably in Gun World with a big old truck tire being rolled across the range, with an archery bullseye in the center as a target. Its way too much work imo.

We get to shoot at rabits, and gophers at our range :) You know I tryed shooting targets wile running/walking tonight. Its not as hard as I thought It would be, although I didn't get 100% hits ofcoarse, but a full out run I would get 5 out of ten at 7 yards, this is a 10" steel plate, and walking pritty much 100%. This is all in soft sand too. Past that range I felt I was spray/praying.

There was a video a while back about guys who tied balloons onto the antenna of a RC truck and drove it around the range while shooting the balloon. Looked kinda fun but can't remembeer who it was. Balloons are light and will show the hits.

I bought a monster truck and put a dowel or branch on the back rack or a 6 foot teather and attach a balloon you dont need (hellium?). I replace it when it pops and thats how it should be shoot until the target is not a threat. put a long one and add two or three get a buddy to get one and run a couple around one guy on two controls is great mass confusion, forward backward power turns zig zag charges its fun stuff.

Yeah, that was me. It did indeed eventually eat a bullet. That's why I only sent out the 25$ truck! It made it to the range only twice before it ate a round, though.

It didn't use helium balloons - just normal ones tied to a dowel with different lengths of string.

Lessons learned:
1. Sweep the dowel back at like a 40 degree angle. That way the string doesn't tangle up. If you have the dowel straight up like a flagpole the balloons and string wind up wrapping around the dowel.

2. Cheap RC trucks don't have a lot of power, so try to stick to level(ish) ground. Also, pick something with decent ground clearance. Even grass and mostly level ground is serious offroading to something as small as an RC truck.

3. It *will* eventually eat a bullet. Accept this before you send it out.

4. Instead of different lengths of string I wound up using ONE long string and tied the balloon necks directly to the string after inflating. You can get 4 balloons or so onto one string pretty easily this way before it starts to sag a little when moving. For more erratic movement of the balloons use more than one string.

Other than that, it really was a lot of fun. Balloons are cheap, provide instant feedback of a hit, and they move erratically which makes things challenging, and you can designate shoot/don't shoot colors at your whim.

I got a 4x4 rc truck ( large radio shack ) and attached a bicycle flag pole to it .
We tie two balloons of different color to the top of the flag pole .
It works best with three people .
one driver , two shooters . The driver tells the shooters when to engage and what color is the " hit " .
the shooter who hits the wrong color balloon gets to drive .
The shooter who hits the right color balloon first gets to keep shooting .
This has been a ton of fun . LMAF the whole time , great fun .
just remember to bring lots of batteries .
As for shooting the r/c truck the balloons are 4-5 feet away from it and there is no way to hit it unintentionally unless you shoot with total idiots .
That said... It is downrange .
