moving to Canada to live & work

Hi all !!!

I'm currently in the process of completing the necessary legal documentation regarding emigrating from Ireland to Canada. At home (Ireland) I take part IPSC Standard division shooting. I'm currently using a modified Glock 22. However I wish to change to a more competative standard division gun like an STI Edge. I'm thinking about whether I'd be better off waiting until I move to Canada (probably Ontario or Alberta in about 2 years time) and then buy when I arrive or would it be as easy to bring my guns with me when I move (I will have to leave my high cap mags at home though!).

If I was to buy in Canada what make & model is most popular for standard division. Do you guys use guns with high capacity frames but use 10 shot mags i.e. STI Edge but with 10 round mags or do you use single stack guns & mags?

I also have a Sabre Defence XR15 semi auto in 223Rem (16" barrel with collapsable stock). I've got 20 & 30 shot magazines for this. Is this legal to own in Canada? It would be nice to be aboe to bring this with me when I move.

You can bring the rifle, but all your mags have to be pinned to 5 rounds.:(

Make sure your paper work is in order before you come, you'll probably have to get a Canadian Possession/Acquisition License (aka PAL) before you can bring it in.:(

You definitely want to wait and buy here. It would be more headache than I want to import a restricted weapon. Actually, on that count your AR is restricted too, it may be easier to sell it and repurchase once your in country.:(

Welcome to our @#$@# gun control laws. They don't stop crime, but they sure incipience the Innocent.:mad:

Mags for PISTOLS must either be 10rd only, or full capacity, but pinned to 10rds[/I]

AR mags are only allowed to hold 5 rds (yes it sucks, but think of it as a way to work on mag changes:rolleyes: ) SO they have to be pinned or riveted to only hold 5 rds...

Hope this helps. Two years is a long way off. Get an Edge if it is easy enough in your country. then maybe sell it off before entering Canada? OThers on this board may have a better solution to importing.
 
just come here, get an unmodified Glock 22/17, and shoot with us in production ;) Use what you're used to.
 
Thanks Guys. I think I'll just shoot what I have and when it's time to pack up and move I'll sell them all & buy again once settled.

This is the best decision, once you get here you'll find all the goodies are readily available at decent prices, also who knows, what will the best choice be then, lucky you will be able to get the next, "great thing".

Why not start now, shooting your IPSC with only 10 rounds in
your mags, to get used to the strategy required for mag changes with 10 round mags.

Well if I was you I would keep using my high capacity mag....and just adjust to 10 rds when I arrived in the land of gun restriction.....meanning Canada of course.....yes there is worst...but I never compare to the worst case.....

I uses High cap mag's which are pin to 10.5 round.......that way you cannot inserted 11 rds but it's still easy to load the last one...I have a couple of 10rds mag and they are hard to load 10 rds..... :)
 
See if you can get a PAL before you move. Call the CFC and find out. It is not necessary to be a Canadian resident to have the permit. If you can get a PAL, register your firearms in Canada; firearms do not have to be in Canada to be registered here. If you have a PAL, and your guns are already registered, bringing them into the country should be straightforeward. There are US residents who come to Canada to compete or hunt. Some obtain the PAL and Certificates. Makes crossing the border easier.
 
Do yourself a favour, and show up here with not one scrap of firearms related anything, except paperwork. Not one mag, not one piece of brass, not even a reloading machine.

Save yourself some serious hassle.

How can you justify what you are saying here? look up the rules before making such a reply! it's easier for foreigners to import evil stuff then for you or me(just can't without a few pieces of papers).....he will have a visa to come over......then it's much easier then you may think ;)
 
It's not all that difficult to import firearms into Canada. The major difficulty encountered by residents is EXPORTING them from the states, not IMPORTING them.

So, it exporting them from Ireland is not a concern, then it's really not that difficult.
 
where you moving to?
Alberta? BC?.... if you go east your gonna have more trouble with trying to find a range in the city but if you go west ...(Edmonton,Alberta) there are a million u can go to.....
plus Alberta and Especially BC are ipsc crazy
