Moving to Rockwood, Ontario

Hey Luc... I grew up in the area and worked as an Enforcement Officer at that conservation area. You will find limited hunting right in the immediate area. There is plenty of hunting close by 15-40 minutes, depending on what your after. Shoot me a PM.

I haven't met anyone, I'm moving there in May, I know very little about the area other than its perfect for raising a family. I did read a bit about the firearms discharge by-law that past in feb of 2010, but don't know any good spots or who Mr. Lain is.

Any help would be appreciated.

Rockwood is surrounded by private property. A lot of which is owned by TO horsey types. Got sentenced to summer camp just outside of town(not the Scout camp), as a pup. The area was a lot wilder then.
There are deer in the bush along the river, of couse, but it's private property. So getting to it may be an issue. Have a look at the aerial map on Mapquest. The area is archery only for deer too. It's WMU 80.
You might find a farmer who will let you on his land though. Once the dust settles from the move, go knock on some doors. Don't go on Sunday, no cammies, don't have any firearm with you. If the guy says no, thank him and leave. It wouldn't hurt to ask if he knows somebody though.
Saunder's Bakery is fabulous.

I don't know what access is like in the Rockwood area, but I know for a fact that it's not too hard to get permission to hunt in the largely Mennonite country north of Elmira. I go on European style drives for jackrabbits and with a group of cars driving around a concession to ask, we usually get permission to hunt the entire concession, maybe minus one or two farms. I've seen other groups of hunters around there who are probably more local and would be good to tap into.

The Jackrabbits are not at a high point in their cycle right now, but we also see fox, coyotes and lots of turkey (often more than the rabbits). I'm not sure exactly how far it would be, but you should be within a reasonable driving distance from Conestoga Lake (waterfowl and released pheasants with a membership), Belwood Lake (waterfowl?) and Luther Marsh to the North (waterfowl, upland and deer). There's also a good number of Crown Land/County forests in the area that can be hunted with OFAH membership and a nominal annual fee paid to the Grand River Conservation Authority. There's also fishing to be had in the area, with tailwater fisheries in the Grand and Conestoga Rivers for brown trout, and warmwater game fish within the resevoirs.

Best of luck at your new home...I almost wish I could have been one of the neighbours out there!

What's stopping you from moving there? I work in Toronto, I'm sick and tired of living in Mississauga, I want to raise my kids in a great community, Rockwood has it all, my commute will be about 60km each way, not a biggie. Did I mention I got a ravine lot :) backs onto the conservation area!!

You got the right idea. I commute 90 km each way three days a week. Brampton/Mississauga is way too urban for my liking. I walk 300 yards from house to my mailbox at the roadway and love it!

its a real nice area.

My Wife lived on a 200 acre farm outside of Edin Mills.

Lots of horse farms in the area and a bad Coyote problem. Something to keep in mind when asking for permission to hunt.

Saunders. I love that place.
