Hello, as the title states I will be moving from Australia to Vancouver. I am an avid shooter and just looking for a little guidance in the right direction, currently i am a member of a service rifle club that primarly shoots Lee Enfields ( Firearm laws in Australia are very strict and this leaves us with bolt actions as our only option to shoot). We shoot from 200 to 600 yards with open sights and 3 positional from 100 too 300. Are there any ranges that have targets out to these distances? Most of the clubs/ranges that are listed seem to only go out to 300. Also is there a large service rifle scene in Vancouver?

Thanks in advance

Bring me some...

Milo,Twisties, Chicos and Cherry Ripes and we'll be great mates. There is heaps of help and info on here, youre in the right spot. Welcome to Canada!

Welcome to CGN and welcome (soon) to Canada. There is a big shooting community in the Vancouver area...I'm sure someone will be along shortly to help you out.

"...a service rifle club..." Hi. Our laws a re stupid, but not as restrictive as Australia. Lots of Service Rifle going on here.
You'll have to get our permits assorted and join a club. Then you can run out and buy a Norinco M305 or M1 Rifle if you want to. http://www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/cfp-pcaf/index-eng.htm
"...Are there any ranges..." DCRA(similar to your NRA) shoots on CF(military) ranges. http://www.dcra.ca/index.php

Welcome to Vancouver. There are precision shooters here but all of the activity is mostly out in the valley. The Lower Mainland is a large area. Vancouver proper does not have any ranges; they are located in the suburbs and out into the valley. Most use ranges to sight in for hunting. Many people shoot in Crown land with no one but nature around. For Service Rifle look at the BC Service Rifle Association.

Thanks, that seems to be a point in the right direction. I was thinking of just starting off with a .303, as i imagine these can be found for cheap and then work my way up from that. I say that but i know i will get caught up and start buying all the toys i cant get over here. I did read something about crown land, are you allowed to just go out and shoot wherever you like?

Lee Enfields can be had for under $400 and less for sporterized (cut down) versions here. .303 is a bit expensive to shoot but you already know that in Australia. My 1916 No1 mkIII is a safe queen so others who are more knowledgeable can tell you more.

Shooting in Crown land is open to any licensed person who is shooting non-restricted firearms of which the Lee Enfield is one. Shooting restricted firearms (handguns or designated military-style guns) anywhere but at an approved range is a no-no. Otherwise, you may be checked for your license and also if you are shooting during hunting season you must have a way to prove you are not poaching (have targets, no other hunting paraphernalia). The other issues are some areas proving too popular and lazy people leaving their junk around. I actually have not had the opportunity to check out any Crown land in my area but have been meaning to, I just lack a vehicle to get out there.

Welcome, Lithgow!

Have a look at the Newbie Section FAQ. The link is in my sigline below. It will probably answer a few questions you may have.

Shooting on crown land with most rifles and shotguns is fine, as noted above. There are discharge restrictions if you close to built up areas though. This map shows where allowed and not allowed.

Difficult to read, I know!

Do you know roughly where in greater Van you will be living? I am in Langley, about 50 km east of Van.

I am going to be living in Waterfront, so i think I'm smack bang in the middle of Van. Having to travel doesn't worry me too much as i already have to do that over here. I will definetly check out the links, thanks.

Welcome to CGN. Waterfront, you can't get anymore downtown Vancouver than that. The closest rifle range will be POCO but I've heard it can be very busy on weekends.
