Before I pose my question, I just want to say I know NOTHING about tactical arms and classifications.....

But my question is this... Why is the MP15-22 classed as restricted and the Mossy tactical is none restricted?

The MP-15 is a variant I believe thus making it restricted and the mossy isn't. Poor explanation I know. Someone will come along shortly and give both of us a teachin'.

The MP-15 is a Variant yes, its an evil black rifle. The Mossberg 22 is a piece of plastic ####e that is built solely for looks, the mossy's features are molded plastic and dont function. Its a model 702 (I believe) if you look at it, you can see its the small 22 magazine that inserts into a molded AR type Magazine, cocking is done by pulling the bolt rearward, not via the charging handle at the rear of the reciever............all in all its a try hards AR & a waste of money, if your after a non restricted .22LR there are much nicer looking tactical rifles out there for around the $450-$700 range. You could go for a G36 Clone by Ruger its a 10/22 drop in stock job or an SR22 or even the Remington VTR .22 can be tricked out to resemble an AR. All the above can be tricked out with most AR aftermarket patrs & acessories.............hope this helps.

The mossberg is cheap, inexpensive and non-restricted

The Smith and Wesson is good quality, more expensive and restricted.

Six of one, half dozen of the other.

The S&W looks more like and AR, has been classified by the RCMP as a 'variant', and is restricted, so no shooting other than at a range. Made of cheap pot metal by a company that makes lookalike airguns with other company's brand names on them. Factory mags re limited to 10 rounds besause S&W make a pistol that uses the same part number. Pistol mags cannot be more than 10 rounds, so there are a bunch of Prohibited devices floating around (the factory 25 rd mags without pins)

The Mossberg is plastic. Cheap. Poorly executed. Looks like hell, IMO. But the factory mags are not limited to 10 rounds.

Really. See the two side by side and decide from there. Look at the Colt too (also restricted, also pot metal) as well as the Ruger 10/22 in an Archangel kit, or the SR-22.

The Archangel kit is plastic, but pretty solid and looks better than the Mossy, IMO. The SR is a Nordic Components shell, built by Ruger and dressed up the way Ruger wanted it, so maybe look at the Nordic kit too, if you have a bunch of AR stuff around, or are looking for a specific look.

The big plus to the Colt or Smith, is that the hand motions match, if you want to practice skills and drills. The 10-22 based guns are bringing a HUGE variety of optional accesories to the table, and the Mossberg is about as cheap as you are gonna get a sorta black rifle for.

Oh yeah. The VTR 597 Remington. Some accessories options, more than the Mossberg, less than the 10-22/SR-22. Not restricted.

They all have pro's and cons. The biggest con that I can think of, that excludes some completely, is the Restricted status, meaning no gophers or bush use.

Good luck!:)

Well, that answers my question. I won't be able to bring my S&W M&P 15-22 back to the northland :-( It's a shame because it's a sweet shooting gun, and inexpensive to blaze away with.

I wouldnt go so far as to call the m&p "pot metal" ... sure its got plastic components and possibly cheap internals (as for me i have never had a bad experience with mine... No failures of any nature..) and i dont believe the m&p to be manufactured by the air pistol giant --- Umarex ... I believe that to be licensed by Colt on their version of the M4 in .22 ... Then again, someone here could prove me wrong ...

Just wanted to bump this old thread and see if anyone has actually shot the mossberg tactical? The five people I have talked that have the rifle love it and it got mostly good reviews from the people who bought it at cabelas. I personally haven't shot it.

I just got my mossberg from cabelas today. Not sure when I will be able to shoot it but the model 702 it's based on is a decent gun. I only bought it after reading some of the reviews. Real ar it's not but it should be fun to shoot.
