mp40 in Libya, 2011

The History Channel (Tank Battles) had a show a while back about the North Africa Campaign. Anyways, there was an older man on the show that lived there and he stepped on an land mine a long time ago and was without a foot or leg, but was still picking up stuff off the desert.

The old joke was that in North Africa before the war, it was man, animals and women in that order when out walking the burning sands. After the war it was women, animals, man, in that order. Makes perfect sense, to them.:p

I fired the MP 40 and sten on same day same targets, ammo, and distance ,the MP 40 is much more accurate, but would be difficult prone i fired them both standing ,5 rd mags sucked hahahaha.

Last time I saw one of those in action was in Cyprus in 1975. A Turk soldier had one that was absolutly silver and his mag pouches were blanched white by the desert sun. I would have loved to have had that one.

Yep, I remember sitting on OP Maple1 ('75/'76), just drooling over the vintage firearms on the Green Line. About 7 years ago I took a trip to Vegus and got to fire the MP40 at The Gun Store. I was impressed very easy to handle.

This one?

Thanks Dinsdale,:dancingbanana:..im challenged in trying to get stuff like that over to CGN..

I do like the aperature sight on the sten, as opposed to the open sight on the MP 40,..The Sten seems to have a reputation of being unreliable, yet the MP 40 used the same single stack mag ,also fired from a open bolt, as the Sten did,..both could be dangerous to their users if care was not taken,..my dad often spoke of many "Accidental Discharge with the sten in Normandy,..he avoided them and carried the No.4 rifle,..the US m3 Grease Gun was guilty to of the Sten & MP 40 faults

Almost all machineguns fire from an open bolt.

Sten was screwed together plumbing parts:p very cheap to make.
The MP40 was finely crafted and it shows.

Turkey has always been a poor cousin in NATO equipped with hand me down equipments. They were still using obsolete M3 Grease Guns, M47 tanks, F-104 Starfighters & US WW2 destroyers in the 80's. Their fighting skills weren't that impressed either.

The Turkish Army must have lost some of their fighting skills, as in the Korean War, the Turkish Brigade was a very aggressive unit,..i read a article, sometime ago, that when the Turks invaded Cyprus in 1974, the Canadian Airborne Regiment was stationed there, and witnessed many Turk paratroopers chutes not opening,..not a good day for the Turk AirBorne

A friend was 2k from the Turk drop zone. Never saw any malfunctions. The turk interpreter was a corporal with US para wings. Turk paras were equipped with M1 Garands, A/T weapons were 106mm recoiless on tripods, also RPG's.
