So your wondering why the SKS needs to be taken away from Mr. Friendly well short story. He let his SKS rust for at least a week after going shooting didn't wipe it down did little better then NOTHING other then 1 pass through the barrel and a little work on the gas chamber (granted his cleaning rod did break but that's only for the barrel right!!!). I'm Down visiting so I go and take a look at the parts sitting on the table and see the bolt is all rusted up same with the bolt carrier.....I know instantly that Mr. Friendly will never do it and it's up to me to clean it and this is why I'm posting this. I'm pretty much done cleaning up the Bolt carrier and about 70% of the bolt now I'm stuck trying to get the Pin out that holds everything together is there something you use to eat rust away or am I suck with using a hammer and punch till I can take it apart?

I've cleaned out most of the Gas Chamber he did do some work on that so it wasn't to bad my question is the part that vents the gas out from the barrel do I need to take that apart as the outside of it was all corroded and I'm figuring the inside is too.

I cleaned the SKS Once before of all the cosmo and showed Mr. Friendly how to strip the gun down and clean it apparently he didn't follow the lesson very well as I'm now cleaning a gun not shooting it!!!!! So any help on getting the Bolt broken down would be nice...I don't want to pound on it with a hammer and punch until I know it's my Last option as I don't want to slip and damage the bolt more then it already is.....

I'm watching you Mr. Friendly and Now so is every other SKS owner I'm his brother if you didn't figure that out by now :D

Thanks for the help/advice
Cheers CK

sounds like me... I clean my SKS after 5 range trips... Or a crate of ammo... what ever comes first...

Still hasent let me down....

Same goes for my Tokarev TT-33 I just drop it in a ammo can full of CLP and let it sit there until I have to use it again.

You guys and you're cleaning. I got better things to do.... LOL...

I say let the gun rust. His lost, you showed him ho to strip and clean it and he let it rust, why should you be left to clean up his mess? but thats just me, I can be a little bit of a A** some times. If you still want to clean it up, try diesel fuel or Kerosene, let the parts soak in it over night... or a week depending how bad they are.

I guess you guys don't want to see an update of "Project Rusty SKS". :D

hahaha nice!!!!!

Carb cleaner...diesel or kerosene I'll have to get him to buy some....gonna have trouble explaining to his apartment manager what the little steel pieces are in the flammable liquids are. As for me cleaning them it's a ONE TIME DEAL I clean it and get to shoot it then watch him clean the guns...though I'm not letting him near my M88 or Ithaca 72 when it comes time to clean them.

I'm shocked, appalled, dismayed and/or any other synonym like those. After every range shoot, even if you don't want to clean it right away, you should always at least soak your firearm in CLP (or other cleaning, lubricating, protecting agent).

*sigh*

Put it this way if gun is worth less then 200$ I dont waste my time cleaning it...

So all my guns fall into that category.... :)

I did order a Canadian Forces Edition .45 APC... I might Have to get a .50 cal Ammo can full of CLP to let that one soak in after range trips...

You should take some time to clean them. They may not be worth that much now, but the future holds many surprises. The Lee Enfield for Example. They were going for less then $15 back in the 60's (which is around $90 today) and now look at them. A good condition, matching one is worth around $500, and non matching ones are still worth around $300. Mint ones go for over $650, and new in wrap ones go for over $750.

Do what I do.... If you can't get to cleaning it ASAP at least soak it with G-96 to prevent any damage or corrosion.... Keep it dry and oiled and even with corrosive ammo you can get away with a lot with no ill effects.

Baahhh--its an SKS---just buy another one:p:p.....now if it was a CZ-858 that would be a different story!!!................Sorry, had to say it---I am most decidedly joking here! Rusted/buggered firearms are a sad thing, no matter what. Hope you manage to sort it out. I once spent an inordinate ammount of time on an old .410 single that had fallen into a shameful state. End result was actually pretty good.

Not everybody is real big on firearms maintenance.

My dad has been hunting his entire life, and owns a handful of rifles and shotguns.

He even doesn't own a gun cleaning kit and doesn't do any maintenance on his firearms at all.

He's one of the most successful hunters I know and has total faith in his firearms.

Go figure...

how could someone be so insensitive towards their firearms
as you can see, all three in my collection are cheap stuff, but still take care of them as if they were my babies (btw i don;t have any)

I clean all my guns thouroughly with a special unmarketed gun cleaner, it also acts as a lubricant(and it works amazing). My 10/22 however is another story. A good bore cleaning, wipe down of the receiver/insides and a little bit of oil is all she gets.

No offence to you Crazy.Kayaker, but this reminds me of an army buddy's owners manual, for a Winchester Model 1200 shotgun back in the eighties.

He snickered as he showed me his recently read manual, for his brand new shotgun:
"Rust is Neglect, and Neglect is a Crime!"in bold letters too.

We both then snickered, as we both thought of our drill sergeants from basic training, must of dictated these lines, verbatum.

However, joking aside, the above statement is very true.
I belong in the regular rifle maintainer camp myself.

Sounds like your brother needs a drill sergeant for 'advice.' ;)
