Hey folks,

I've been doing a lot of reading through the writings of Peter Laidler lately and wonder if anyone knows what he is up to these days?

A quick search brought up some legal issues, but its been a few years now. I don't see many recent postings from him on any of the forums he once posted on.

Just curious as I always get a chuckle reading his stuff. Love his little quips.

He still posts occasionally over on milsurps.com, but certainly less than he used to it seems. He is an amazing wealth of knowledge and we are lucky to have him as a resource.

firearms expert who stole rifles from a historical collection at an army base has been jailed for three years.

Peter Laidler, 72, of Marcham, Oxfordshire, took sniper and assault rifles from the Small Arms School Collection in Warminster, Wiltshire.

He was found guilty of four thefts after two trials at Winchester Crown Court. He also admitted possessing a prohibited high-powered pistol.

Same guy?!

Yes

I am sure that he was just "borrowing" those firearms....

Thanks for providing the same info that Google does.

Pretty sure I didn't ask about that, but I appreciate the expected replies.

Thanks for your answer Tarrantula. I appreciate you not reiterating what was found on Google :)

Time to file a hurt feelings report or what...

No, not butt hurt. I suppose that a mature response was expecting too much? Or, that if you didn't have a clue, you would feel the need to let everyone else know that you don't have a clue or an important response.

Do you reply just to read yourself?

The way you worded your query left you wide open for the results you got.

Laidler is not as active as he once was for all sorts of reasons.

The court issues are one of the major reasons.

I have spoken to a few people who know him and frequent his companionship on a regular basis.

He no longer has access to the massive government or any other collections after the trials were over.

It's also a stigma that will hang over his head for the rest of his life. Deserved or not.

The unconfirmed version I was given - Laidler was trying to save the firearms from destruction or something along that line. There were also other items involved but they didn't fall under the British version of the Firearms Act and the mainstream media ignored them.

If you query him on milsurps.com, he will answer, usually.

I know your query will be polite, so I can see him responding similarly. He's quite gentlemanly when push comes to shove and a bit of a thorn in the side of the antis in the UK, but because of his reputation, they had to be very careful handling his case.

If you can draw him out, he will answer your questions, maybe with more information than you can use, and you will have to wade through tomes of detail.

All said and done, he's a nice guy.

Thanks bearhunter. He is a living database of knowledge and appreciate what he brings to the community.

Perhaps I could have worded things differently, not sure it would have made a difference though ;)

Again, I appreciate your time taken to answer as thoroughly as you did. I am grateful for everyone who answered.

I was hoping he might be working an a new book of some sort.

When you become a leading figure in the Firearms world, you automatically become a target of the political wing of the police - ask Larry Vickers. Even our own Strangeday (anyone remember him) had a visit from police officers on a fishing trip, too bad they didn't know his security cameras had sound as well as video, if they had, they might have had more success, and looked less stupid.

He should reprint his books etc

You folks are missing another living and walking data base right here on this site.

Stan Taylor.

He, along with Wheaty and a few others did a lot of work putting many of those books together.

Ply them for their knowledge, they're all great guys and love discussing or teaching what they know.

Don't waste the opportunity, they're all getting long in the tooth.

Not only that, you would make both of your days pleasant when meeting these gentlemen.

Okay, there's way more to this story that needs to be told. Purely educational...it would be beneficial to understand how cops operate, what they ask, how the questions are best responded to.

I talked to him yesterday. :)

He's a smart cookie.

Mr Laidler is the main reason why I've been working on Lee Enfields for the past 25 years. Back then we chatted via a Message Board, and emails. He never refused to share tips and stories with me, always taking the time to answer every and any questions I had. I owe him a LOT. He's quite a gentleman, in my humble opinion.

That's been my experience with him for a decade longer than your experience Lou.
