MR223 or modified M4/AR15 type

Good day people.

Little question for those of you who are used to built AR from spare parts.

I'm considering buying an MR223 as soon as I get my licence but the price acts a bit like a cold shower on me each time I see it.

So do you think it would really cost less to build an M4 or AR15 type semi-auto rifle from spare parts to stick as much as possible to the MR223 reliability.
This because my last shooting session with an AR15 type was pretty horrible (SR16), on 5 mags more or less I had a dozen double feeds and about five or six misfeed on a gun I just cleaned (looked a bit old though).

What I basicly want is a 14,5 or 16" rifle with free floating railed handgard with gas piston system (hate cleaning).

I already have grip, stock and sights (Magpul MIAD, ACS and MBUS).

I'd love an ACR but didn't see mention of semi auto only :(

So do you think it would cost less to mount an AR15 like that than buying an MR223 ?

Unless you are familar with the system, I wouldn't built one from scratch, if the main reason you want build one as a learning experience than don't surprised that the reliability isn't there at first.

There are a few piston AR's on the market that is way cheaper than the HK and just as reliable, unless you intend on crawl thru dirt and mud with it, whatever your getting will be more reliable than what you will be using it for. ;)
 
The notion that a piston driven AR is more reliable than a comparable DI one has been beaten to death. Under high round count, full auto, adverse conditions maybe but with your 5 round mags and a manicured range, it is laughable.

It is more than probable that the mags you were using were the cause of the issues you had, and not the rifle itself (assuming it wasn't a built-up unit done by a back yard shade tree gun plumber).

If you buy a decent quality DI 16" carbine and supply it with good quality mags and ammo, there is no reasoning it should not serve you well.
(I'd recommend a Stag, RRA, CMMG or similar that one of the vendors above has in stock).
I wouldn't waste time with a piston gun build up; if the H&K is what you want - get it.
 
Thanks guys, I think I will build an AR from spare parts.

I don't hate cleaning to the point where I don't clean the gun at all, it's just that I dislike it a lot and the piston system in the MR223 (I tested on both HK416 and G36) make me spend less time cleaning the rifle.

For the SR16 I think it was really just old because I was using short Pmags and match grade ammunition while standing.
 
Maybe try the CMMG piston upper from Questar.

The entire rifle itself is about 1850 for a 16" complete rifle, or you can get the 11.5" upper only for 1500-ish, and build the lower yourself.

You can buy the upper with an option to put on a CMMG quad rail for an extra 300 bucks, or of course do it yourself with a free float quad rail or something.

Nice thing about the CMMG is the piston comes out the front so you dont have to take the handguard off to strip & clean the piston. Its short stroke design like the HK 416, although a little different.
 
I will probably go for a CMMG carbine with piston and change the handgard for a DD one.
I don't like really short barrels, I prefer length of 14,5 or 16" so the 11,5 is a no go.

Didn't know we could take out the piton from the front though, nice idea.

Little question: does anybody know if the CMMG 16" carbine with piston is using a standard AR15 lower receiver ? If possible I'd like to install an SR15E3 lower receiver (with ambidextrous controls, I switch hands when I feel like it) but I don't know if that's possible...
 
it is milspec so yeah it will switch out. But you wont be able to just buy a SR15E3 lower, you gotta buy the whole gun $4200-$4600 after tax.

Why dont you look for a LMT MRP Piston, those are IMO just as nice as HK with quick change barrel.

As for shooting fully auto SR16 and having a bad experience, thats too bad man. They ARE the cats ass for a DI gun IMO.
 
I'm not very familiar on gas piston system on AR. I know the one on the HK416, G36 and AK but I'm a complete rookie with AR even if I know how to mount them.

As for full auto I don't need that, I'm not the trigger happy type, just like semi-auto rifle for medium range.
I first intended to get a 7.62 NATO rifle but AR10 are a pain to get so I just forget about that idea and plan on a 16" 5.56 semi auto AR15 type rifle.
