Can a Colt Canada IUR 15.7" rifle have its naughty bits transferred to one of these bolt-action receivers?
The thought is pretty nasty, but if the worst (or almost worst) happens, how does the Colt come apart to let the good stuff live on?

yes, you'll need to buy a standard AR barrel nut and a new handguard of your choice though. In order to remove the IUR barrel nut, you'll also need a proprietary IUR barrel nut wrench. Nordic Marksman or True North Arms sold them, but they dont seem to be in stock. Your best bet is to find someone who will let you borrow or buy one

There's basically an extra-extra-deep socket that fits over the entire barrel and onto the nut way down in the depths of that upper. TNA had some long ago but it wasn't something you'd have planned to need to do back then, and I haven't seen anyone offering the tool lately and now there's the question of probably needing to bring the tool to the upper because of the upper's OIC prohib cooties and not being able to just take it to a gunsmith anymore.

Maybe we need a gunsmith who does house calls for IUR barrel removals?

If all else fails and you get to the eve of having to turn it all in, then carefully cutting off the handguard just forward of the bulkhead would let you use a more-normal wrench to save your barrel before giving the authorities the remains of the upper.

If it comes down to it in the end I would send mine around with a deposit to ensure return. I guess if you were writing off the receiver anyways you could cut the handguard off at the barrel and turn the nut with a punch or something to get it off.

It would be a shame to ruin the handguard if the OIC was rescinded. I'm sure folks would appreciate the use of your wrench.
