If i was to build a Maverick with a 10 or 12" barrel, just long enough to stay non restricted what would be the best 308 based caliber for this barrel length. Would like something hard hitting, where performance is not going to suffer due to barrel length.

308/7.62x51
45 Raptor
375 Raptor
or??

I would personally do 308 with heavy weight bullets and a relatively fast burning powder. But for me cost per round is a large consideration.

Just google ballistics by the inch and whatever caliber you want to look up, they have done a lot of tests for a lot of different cartridges.

Of all the calibers that have had ballistics studies done on them, 7.62x51 has got to be a top three contender for data on performance. I think you’re exactly right, if you want to build a shorty full bore rifle, and don’t want to do a lot of testing on your own, 308 win is a solid place to start.

That said, the case volume to bore diameter ratio dictates performance lost or gained by barrel length. The lower the case volume to bore diameter ratio, the less a short barrel affects performance. To put it more simply, the wider the bullet for a given powder charge, the shorter the barrel you can use effectively.

Side note; if you plan to hunt with this rifle, I can’t speak for everywhere in Canada but I know in BC the hunting regs stipulate a 12” or greater barrel length.
