MRA Renegade/Maverick... is the bolt removal a deal breaker for you?

Similarly, I recently started a thread about wanting just a traditional bolt action AR upper that accepts all other AR parts (lowers, barrels, handguards, buffer tubes, grips, etc). Just for the modularity, endless selection of standardized parts, and ease of barrel change (no head spacing).

Just the ultimate minimalist rifle. No gunsmith needed. Every part serviceable by the user with simple tools. Like a duty pistol.
Yeah, I remember reading it. Although I'm torn between a bolt and pump action if it's AR configured. They would have different uses for me. One's better for run and gun, the other for bench plinking.

Yeah I agree. A pump like the Taipan X would blow away the straight pull in any sort of rapid fire scenario. You're not breaking your grip with either hand, but then on a bench with a rest the pump becomes a major hindrance.

To your earlier point, traditional bolt actions in a chassis like MDT are great because they basically all have aluminum bedding blocks in them verus a wood stock which eliminates the headache of epoxy bedding and makes torquing action screws way easier and more consistent. If only more traditional bolt actions came with a barrel nut like Savage.

Yeah. When the straight pull bolt guns came out, I liked the concept of a super shorty bolt gun but not their execution, so I had Mystic Precision build me a 700 .223 with MDT chassis and 12" barrel. Between that and my 700 PCR SB in 308 with 12" barrel, they're among my most favorite guns I own and stupid simple to clean. And I can still get hits out to 600 with them.

Bolt removal is not really a pain as it does not seem to get dirty in the chamber. Barrel cleaning is a bit more of an issue as you have to do it more carefully from the muzzle end.

I am having a couple of other issues with my Maverick and I am trying to get some meaningful help from MRA. I am reluctant to discuss further until MRA have had a full opportunity to respond.

My mistake. Thanks.

No big deal. So what do you think? Deal breaker for you or not really?

Damn, now I'm interested to know...

Not a deal breaker for me. I've had a Gen I since 2021 and haven't had a hard time keeping the inside of the receiver clean enough. Using parts from a Ruger AR.

It might help that I have a special pin from TacOrd that seals off the gas block well. I think with the complete builds by MRA they use a barrel without a gas port so those would also run clean.

I've considered upgrading to a Gen II with the bolt hold open but I'm happy enough with what I've got. Still fun to shoot (but not as good as pre-May 2020 of course).

Really ought to clean the barrel properly once in awhile, and that involves unscrewing the buffer tube and charging handles in order to take out the bolt carrier group and get a cleaning rod in from the breech end. Aaaurgh! Almost tempts me to cheat by holding the bolt open and using a boresnake, or perhaps using a rod from the muzzle end and rely on the brake to protect the barrel crown.

I'm not sure if you could have as short a barrel with it, since you may be able to fire it once folded, but would a LAW buffer tube folding adapter allow easier access for cleaning then removing the buffer tube?

Not sure what the concern is…Removing and then re-installing the buffer tube adds less than 5 minutes to the cleaning process. A cleaning process that is only necessary once or twice a year for a normal use rifle.

I own both a Renegade and a Maverick and enjoy them for what they are. So no, not a deal breaker for me…

Repeated tightening and loosening of the castle nut everytime you want to clean or lube or inspect just causes unnecessary wear. Plus you can't stake the castle nut with this setup.
