With the sectional density of a dinnerplate flying sideways and a trash BC, the benefits of the 185 338 cal bullet are largely made up. Now, for a recoil sensitive shooter the whole things mightn't be a bad idea, but if you're that recoil sensitive, a 308 or 7mm-08 would still be a better choice.

Better. Just like a 165 gr 308 TSX.
The SD matters all the time. I prefer higher SD for increased penetration, same reason I prefer heavy for caliber bullets. 225 or 250 in a 338 is more my speed. Still, if you want a 338 shooting light bullets, fill your boots. I just don't see the point. 1/2" of bolt throw? 2" less rifle? 5 oz less weight? Minutiae.
Proof is in the pudding, and I know for a fact that the 185gr TSX at 2700fps penetrates just a hair less than a 180 Partition out of a 30-06 at the same speed at 150yds. And anyone willing to state that the 180gr at 2700 out of an '06 can't kill moose and such, has a lot of resurrecting to do.
It isn't meant to be a .338 WM. That's why they called it the .338 Federal

You can't see why Winchester created the 338 WM but you see a place for the 338 Fed.?
SD is somewhat important, but even more important is bullet construction for increased penetration. A theoretical 220 gr vmax in 300 Mag would not outpenetrate a 130gr Barnes X bullet with its pitiful SD.
Although I have not done it, I suspect a 185 gr TSX 338" going 2750 fps will kill animals!
