Mule buck scouting

I have never even seen a 180+ while hunting, and you casually snap pictures of them every scouting trip.

Clearly you know something I don't!

It's a tough zone to draw a tag in...took me 7 years until I got drawn last fall in the same zone.I took a spindly 180" buck that I was happy with!

I've hunted in this zone for 21 years and professionally guided for 8 years. Many nooks and crannies I know of where deer hang out, especially the big ones. Mule deer hunting is a lot of fun, however not as challenging as the good old whitetail buck. The other night I found these guys and call them "The Wild Bunch".

I don't doubt they arnt hard to hunt, especially in those fields, I always pictured Muleys up in the big open high country valleys. that's where id love to hunt muleys.

anything in a field is relatively 'easy' to hunt/shoot.

Is all your muley country flat in your local area mate?

Your correct, open country hunting is easier, this is the reason why prairie big game hunting is limited to 4 days a week. The zone that I hunt varies in terrain.......flat, rolling hills, coulees, and river bottoms. The Rocky Mountains and Foothills do have great mule deer with the foothills having the higher population and trophies. The big mountains have less densities and of course the terrain is most challenging. A big rocky mountain mule deer is a great hunt and trophy.

Went out this evening and found these two guys milling about in the freshly cut fields. A rag horn 6x6 bull elk and a 180 mule buck.

WOW!!!! I also got drawn for mule buck in 310! (Bar U ranch area) I need to start scouting and see whats out there this year!

Found this guy yesterday evening chewing his cud and enjoying the peace and quiet of rural life..........until opening day that is.

I can't believe a buck of that size - or any size really - would just lay down in the open like that in broad daylight. I guess that is the difference when hunting farms. Although I do have access to one small farm, and they still don't lie in the open like that!

Generally when deer are rutting hard, be it mule or whitetail, they mind no heed to the human predator. In this case I know this particular deer, and there has been absolutely no hunting pressure on this animal, not even by a bow hunter. The pre-rut has started but they are about three weeks away from hard heavy rutting.

Can't you see? He is checking the calendar and the hunting regulations . . . he won't be there on opening day!

Your probably right, Murphy's Law on opening day, been there done that many of times, searching and finding him is the fun part.............that's hunting!

Gorgeous specimens there track, I'd hang pretty much anyone of them in my shop. I will admit I'm a little jealous to say the least, you seem to have more time for scouring than most of us do for hunting. Keep the pics coming

Went out again this evening and my little camera zoomed in on this wide 5x5 as he laid out at 500 yards. This guy has a very swollen neck and should gross 180 B&C.
