Hey fellas, im pretty interested in the Back country Mulies to be specific, but Mule Deer in General are cool, I guess where they live in the back blocks up high is what cranks my gears about them....

unfortunatly never run into a Muley while hunting down here, so rely on Forums to get a Muley Fix!

How many of you have shot Mule deer? Anyone interested in sharing a photo or 4, a short story about the hunt incl the importants?

Look forward to seeing some

cheers

Our mule deer is on a draw system, with an either ### tag comeing up about every three years. Doe tags are also draw, but until recently you could count on getting 2 to four tags for them. Also for a few years there were various "earn a buck" schemes and CWD zones where you could basically shoot all you could handle and then some.

This year two of my kids (13 and 17) and myself had 2 non trophy tags apiece which they filled with muzzleloaders and I filled as incidentals while takeing the kids out. In order to not be competeing with my kids I'll usually just take a long range rifle along. This year it was a Defensive Edge Canyon rifle in .338 Edge. Anyways tags got filled, theirs with the muzzleloaders and mine with the 'Edge at well never mind how far away. Most of them were taken on my place.

Last year my son had his trophy tag, and I had a pretty fair idea where we could find two bucks that hung around together. Its not that hard to keep a eye out when its my own land. Short story made even shorter we found the buck 1/2 hour after daylight, and although he was moveing away he made the mistake mulies often make and stopped for a look back. That was the last thing he did, because Caleb was following him in his scope and made the 330 yard shot with his .257 Weatherby.

The last buck tag I had was a few years back and I was hunting with a couple friends who regularly put in for the draw with me. After takeing the bugging about always filling my tag on the first day, I did it again. We had a local gent who had secured permission for half the country and he was touring us around showing us where we could go. It wasn't very far into the morning when we were watching a couple of bucks on a ridge who were also watching us. Our friend opined that the front one was fairly decent but we couldn't get within a half mile of them. I was rangeing to them and various hilltops in between and knew I could take about 300 yards off that 1/2 mile estimate. Short story even shorter, a 17 pound .338 and I went for a walk, and the buck piled up where he was standing while the guys stayed back and watched. It was a bit of an adventure to get a truck to it, but easier than carrying it. That left me the rest of the week to fill doe tags and call coyotes, which is pretty much what I wanted to do in the first place.

I mostly just walk out my door with my rifle when hunting mule deer, not very exotic or rugged country, just nice typical rolling brushy mule deer habitat.

I do miss going for mulies!!!

A different type of day than waiting and trying to outsmart big white tails.

I'd rather hunt mule deer in the big country down south than guard a bait pile any day. It's my preferred hunting style.

Here is a few shots for you.

they're not all big bucks!

That's true. I have a lot of fun putting my kids on mulie does, shooting muzzleloaders in t-shirt weather. For myself I sometimes wonder if it would matter if I never shot another deer of any kind, but for the kids everything is still new.

Awesome, thanks for the words to go with some pics!

I watch a few youtube clips of "backcountry" hunts, mostly from USA i guess, but CAN would be no different... id love to do it for a week or so one time before my times up!

Are most of these shot from a long distance? i have a feeling it would be a long distance affair with them, especially in the 'mulie country' terrain photo, as there isnt much cover, unless your winding your way up a gulley.

Are they tougher than a WT?

again some nice photos an some good bucks, good on the kids for harvesting some meat too!

Cheers

Shots can be as far as you want them to be or as close as you can get. I've shot two at over 300 yards but nothing over 330. Many bow hunters do very well and lots of monster bucks are taken every year with archery gear. A hunter just has to go slow and pick his spots.

As for mule deer being tougher than a white tail, they are not not. They are a little bigger in average but not by much. Both deer die quick when a bullet is placed right.

Mule deer don't hold a candle to whitetail, they are quite opposite to each other when it comes to grey matter. In fact, big horn sheep, mountain goat, antelope and mule deer I rank the same...........brainless compared to the mature whitetail. If you want a challenge to your hunt try a mature whitetail, one on one following a long and wide stride track. Sorry for getting off topic. Shot could be long or short but have your gun sighted in for a 300 yard shot. Here is the photo of my son with his 2012 mule deer buck and then followed by two Boone and Crockett bucks, 192 and 198 net that were killed by my clients. All bucks killed were one on one with me.

Here's the last mulie buck I shot a few years ago near Lethbridge. I shot him with a 270 WSM near the top of the Old Man River Coulee, and he ended up at the bottom after sliding half way down the slope. That was a lot of work to haul him out!

And since mulie hunting isn't always about the big bucks, here is my hunting buddy and his son with the boy's first deer ever on the same hunt!
