Its just you.:p

I agree. To me the "best" mule deer hunting is early season - September, and maybe into early October - in the high country. The weather is usually good, especially in early September, and the bucks are still very good eating. I find that mulies in the rut are downright stank to the point where they are almost inedible.

Many would disagree with me on this , but just because a rutting mule deer buck stinks on the outside does not make the meat stink. Sloppy skinning and meat handling makes the meat stink! Touch those tarsal glands and then use the same hand to touch the meat and there will be problems. Of course, a rutting buck is thinner, and the fat may be carrying some taint, but the fat should all be trimmed anyway. I like to eat all mule deer. I just like fawns better! :)

Yup - I'm one of the ones that disagree. I know about tarsal glands and I am very cautious when I skin them. I will only shoot a mule deer before November, because I've had one too many bad experiences. Four to be exact. :)

On the other hand I've never had a bad September mule deer.

Totally agree, we shoot all our deer during the rut and have never had a problem with the meat at all.

Sorry to the OP that these are not mountain deer, but they are still mule deer. Here are three more that I guided hunters on to. One is a very old buck (8 or 9 years old). All mule deer were harvested about 20 miles east of the Rocky Mountains.
