Mule Deer Hunting

So what are some tips and tricks for hunting Mule Deer that you have found effective?

How do you hunt them? What kind of terrain? Time of day? Weather?

during the rut, all day, spot and stalk, hiking and glassing.

spot and stock has always worked for me.

Make sure you stop and glass your cut overs well. They blend in well.

Down in Southern Sask it is nothing to see about 12-14 bucks a day.

Alot of the times they skyline themselves on distant hillside.

We used the exact tactics stated above to hunt them. Alot of the times we found them close to where we originally spotted them. Then it is time to crouch crawl in for a shot.

I was stalking/crawling up over a hillside last Fall to get at a decent buck...and when I peeked over the hillside I seen a trophy. Took him at 328 yards and he gross scored 190 typical.

Don't forget your range-finder.

Around here it's VERY unlikely to spot a deer more than 100 yards away do to the terrain and brush we have (Heavy Mountains and Heavy Trees). There are no open spots around here unless it's a cut block.

That's where you want to hunt around here.

Find a recent block without too much overgrowth and plunk your ass down. Do this about 3 hours before sunset and stay there until dark.

There is no open season for mule deer mid-November in Region 5.

Best way I've found to hunt mule deer is to go out for whitetail. Every year I've been out with a general whitetail tag, I see big mulies.

Yes, they have really screwed with the mule deer season this year here in Region 5. "Anybuck" season only runs for the month of October with 4 Point season being broken up into chunks. This is also on top of cutting our season total from 2 bucks to 1.

I guess the G.O. association spent some big money lobbying the government as we defiantly don't have a shortage of mule deer ....................

A buddy and I were having a similar conversation yesterday about this and we got to talking about the weather here in South Sask. It's been really messed up this fall. It went from 30 above to -2 with snow. We got to thinking that there might be a false rut on due to the snow. I've been stuck at work for the last week and haven't gotten out. Has anyone noticed anything yet?
