After many years of hunting with horses, I'm getting a mule to try . It is a yearling and although I have experience with horses, I have zero with mules.

After many years of marriage and raising three kids, I think I'm up for the mental abuse of training one.

I'd appreciate any info or tips you fellas can offer. :D

Just remember the biggest difference between horses and mules. A horse may on occasion kick at you while a mule will kick you.

Seriously though when it comes to hunting a good mule will leave the best saddle horse in the dust when the going gets tough. (Just don't expect a nice soft suspension ride though! ;) )

Brad Cammron just did a clinic in alberta on working with mules I think it was somewhere near olds. I've owned several horses in the past and presently have one horse and one mule. as far as I'm conserned the mule is worth at least a dozen horses. They are smarter and when you teach them something they don't forget. unlike a horse that has to go through the same motion repeatedly in order for it to stick. With that in mind, don't piss off your mule, it will get you back! But, as for the stuborn part, it's a load of crap! Las fall we started a mule, within an hour of putting a saddle on her for the first time we were on her back. No bucking, no problem. I'm far from an experienced rider and I even rode her that afternoon.

A friend had a grade Belgian Mare, and he bred her to something different every year. The Quarter horse cross was impressive; The mule was even more impressive. Give a mule its head and it will pick the way - even across boulders in a stream.

mules

Thanks guys. So what makes a mule better than a horse? An d how about training, any tips there.

I use John Lyons techniques in a round pen for my horses. Since I started that in 1995, I've never had a horse buck.:D I'm hoping it will work on the mule as well.
Any one know of any other clinics?
