I've done all the usual searches with not much luck.
As I'm new to this world, I'd rather not have to stock a bunch of different powders.
Is there one powder out there that will work reasonably well in a bunch of different calibres?
As I only shoot paper for fun, accuracy is not a huge issue. I'd prefer something that doesn't make a mess of my guns, as I don't like cleaning!
Anyways, I'll be reloading the following.
.38 spl/.357 mag
.44 spl/.44 mag
.45 acp
.45 long
.44-40
(I think that's it...)
I've read good and bad about Titegroup, Universal, Clays and Trailboss... all the ones I planned on using.
All my loads (with a few exceptions) will be light. Again, only killing paper.
Opinions and suggestion are greatly appreciated.
o.g.

I have had no problems with Titegroup and I shoot all those calibers(and more) with the exception of 44-40. My second choice is W231 but I have no doubt others will be sharing their opinions as well.
Good luck

Win231 - Commonly available (at least in my area) and easy to find. I find it consistent and good powder for plinking and practice rounds. It's a sooty/dirty in my gun, but I always go back to 231 whenever I cant get Titegroup and VVN320.

Good luck and load safely. :)

I use Red Dot a fair amount.

In 45 ACP/44 special mostly.
It too is a dirty powder in my opinion.

Makes you wonder how far this is from being a black powder?

PS Would you users of Titegroup classify this as a "bulky" powder?
Cheers........:)

Since you are going to be using light loads, consider Trailboss. It is designed as a bulky powder for light loads. I have seen it used in "stout" 44 Mag loads and it is fairly clean.

Burning speed is between Tightgroup and W231 so generally good for everything you will be loading except max loads in 44 Mag.

Other than that, I would suggest Tightgroup. (Brutus, Tightgroup is NOT a bulky powder) W231 would be on the dirty side when used for light loads, as the pressures it would generate are not high enough for clean burning.

If you are only using light loads, you might also consider Clays. Great powder for light loads. It is very fast burning (a bit faster than Bullseye) and very clean, but because of small charge weights of powder, you can't see a double charge in 38/357 or 44 mag cases.

Of the powders mentioned, Clays is the cleanest, but needs the most care in loading because it is a very fast powder.

Say 38 Special target loads, 148gr

Clays 2.4 gr
Tightgroup 3gr
Win 231 3.7gr
Trailboss 2.2gr

At 3gr per load, 1lb will load 2,300 cartridges.

I load some of thoes cal and I use tightgroup, but it is not a mag powder you can find loads for the mag but you will be unhappy with the result for 357,and 44 mag. I like h110 for the mag stuff, nice feel, good clean snap.
thats just me
