This may have already been discussed, but maybe not. I know the optimum load for a particular cartridge will use the most efficient powder for that load. However, with ammo and reloading components getting scarce, I'm after something a bit more general that I can load anything with.

Right, we know there are general purpose powders that you can load pistol & rifle, sometimes shotgun with one powder. I'm under no illusion that these loads won't be tack drivers. Here's what I'm shooting. 9mm, 45 cal, 5.56, .308, 45/70, 12 & 16 ga. Tall order, I know. There likely isn't a single powder, but maybe two that'll work. I'm trying to keep it down to one or two powders as SHTF stock. Let's hear your thoughts.Tanks!

You need to change your print size to something a wee bit bigger. :)

Other that than that, Unique is one good old powder for a lot of different applications.

Tite group, unique, 2400, h4895 and imr3031 are some very versatile powders and will work for pistol, shotgun and rifle. Also cast and jacketed.

Unique and h4895 would be what id want if i could only have 2.

Ive used h4895 in cases that range from ~12gr in a win 25-20 to over 100gr in my 460 weatherby. A little slow for pistol or shotgun but will work in almost every rifle center fire case with either cast of jacketed. There is no one powder for all.

The problem with good all round powders like IMR 4064, Unique etc, is that they are usually the first to sell out. It is great to stock up when available but working up a list of alternatives for the lean times is a good idea as well. I try to have a list of at least 3 different powders I can use for each of my go to cartridges. Unfortunately this is best done when components are plentiful.
Good Luck.

I don’t try to settle on 1 or 2 powder types, or 22LR brands. I try to buy relatively common powders/ammo when I can afford it. Having a half dozen middle of the road options works best. If I have lots of one I use the calibers that it serves best. This discussion is moot if you buy several kegs at a time. Yes, working up a basic load or sighting in a 22 more often is another step. Buy early and big, or buy what you can find and make do.

Unique can be used only with light loads in 12 and 16ga. If you are reloading for waterfowl or heavy field loads than you have to use smth else.

For a few years now, I have been using HP38 in a bunch of different pistol rounds (9mm, .40, .45, .38 Special and +P; and I like it.
