Full disclosure: I'm in no way affiliated to Mr Charlton; besides one phone call and a few emails with the office manager, I don't even know the gentleman.
As we often have threads asking about gunsmith reviews, here's my take on Mr Murray Charlton (http://murraycharltonenterprises.com/), hope others find is useful.
After taking delivery of my new to me 586 no dash, I wasn't sure if everything was in spec (cylinder gap, shake, end play, etc); the action was good, but not as good as my 627PC so after exchanging a few emails with the office manager Gina, I sent the gun to have it checked and have the action tuned up (along with my K22). I was told before hand that Murray was out for a couple of weeks and that my firearms would be put in queue, so I knew I'd be looking at about a month at the very least. The day after Murray was supposed to be back into the shop, he personally called me to go over what I wanted. He gave me a quote ($150) and indicated that when he was satisfied with the work, I'd be contacted for payment. 2 weeks later I received a call from Gina, saying everything was ready to be shipped back; payment done over the phone and 4 days later gun was back in my possession.
Included with the gun, I got :
- a full page letter describing the work he did and what to do if I get any failures to ignite
- 12 spent casings from his test fire
- replaced spring (I assume it's the return spring, but not sure)
- he also did the S&W recall and M stamped the frame (which I indicated I desired done)
Yesterday I took it to the range: it's hard to express how "right" it now feels. Everything is smooth, trigger is much lighter (guess-estimate ~4-5 lbs in DA, but haven't measured), and completely devoid of any creep/hesitation. With the 627 my hand starts getting tired after ~150 rounds in double action, but I shot over 200 with the 586 and barely felt tired (I shoot almost only DA). I'm a bit picky when it comes to triggers feel and this one is very good. I got zero failures to ignite with the Federal primers I use.
In short, I highly recommend Mr Charlton; his price is not cheap, but I think is very good value. The service provided was professional, on time and exactly what I was quoted (which can't be said for all gunsmiths...). If you have a revolver and are on the fence, definitely give it a go!
