Re-loads only eject a few feet from the rifle, and mostly in the same place, not like the factory loads. I do most of my shooting from a prepared firing point and pick up all casing after firing. See avatar. Re-loading these with 155gr cast bullets my cost is about 7 cents a round. And with the Murry firing pin I can use the cheaper primers as primer hardness is not a concern.

I spent the $39 bucks and I love it, the staff at Murrays were very helpful. Gotta love that Texas accent! An extra spring is included, just in case.

Gotta agree...The Murray firing pin would be a great accessory for an SKS that only shot non-corrosive ammo & for the owner that doesn't like to take it all apart after every shooting session...BUT if you're shooting cheap corrosive like most of us, the firing pin is going to get gummed up pretty quick, spring or no spring. Every SKS owner should learn how to disassemble the bolt and be prepared to pull it apart after every range visit.
 
Before I purchased my russian SKS, I tried my cousins chinese model. I think we fired possibly 40 rounds before I had a slam fire. This was with surplus ammo and only one shot went off (luckly). The gun was clean. I purchased the Murrays spring loaded firing pin. It works great and takes about a minute to install. It's a little 40$ insurance policy for me that anyone tying my rifle doesn't get a slam fire. Safety first.

Just remember, don't ever oil the fining pin after cleaning the gun. :) have fun!
 
I purchased one for my Norinco SKS and after 300 or so rounds I had a complete firing pin failure (it broke right at the shoulder). I contacted. Murray's and he said the problem is with the surplus ammo primers in that they are very hard. He subsequently sent me a replacement at no cost. I have not had a chance to test the replacement yet. Over all I think if you keep your firearm clean this is an unnecessary upgrade.

Hmmm........

I've shot thousands of surplus rounds through 2 SKS' and never had an issue.

I've also shot 300+ rounds of Priv Partizan commercial ammo and never had a slamfire issue.

My SKS' don't have the spring-loaded firing pin. They get cleaned after every range session or hunting trip.

Is it necessary to have a spring-loaded firing pin? I don't think so, based on my experience.

That said, if the SKS owner feels that they need the spring-loaded firing pin to prevent slamfires, go for it. $40 is cheap insurance.

Cool spot there 3 feathers. Prairies?........I don't hunt w my sks's, so fmj either Russian or Czechoslovakian is what I'm using at the range. if you buy it by the crate its between .04-.06 cents a round......but it chucks the casings from here to Saskatchewan. :D.......BTW, I oil my bolt assembly everytime I clean it and I've never had a slam fire. I find the oil helps in the cleaning process as the crud washes/wipes off very easily. Do you shoot a Russian sks or Chinese?
 
In my opinion, it doesn't hurt to take the bolt apart when cleaning the rifle to make sure there isn't any crap in there. However, if you do a good job cleaning the bolt without dissasembling it and the firing pin springs back properly when pushed, I don't see a problem with that.

Also Murray is an excelent guy to deal with. I had popped primer issues which led to my 2 murray springs getting totalled. He sent me 2 new springs free of charge after he helped me fix the issue!!!!

Shooting a Chinese, Tapco, scout mount, w/a red dot. Shoots a pretty decent group @100, with my reloads 3-4, factory ammo 6-7, that should improve. Next purchase will be a Russian for re-finishing, leaving it unmodified, except for the firing pin. Cheapest I can find factory is 800rds @$199 WSS.

very respectable groups 3 feathers. My Russian ('54 Izzy laminate) out shoots my ChiCom.....You won't regret the Russian...look for "bright bolt" ones (light refurb's) the "Black" painted bolts are more heavily refurbed. That's not to say they won't group for you (just look cleaner :D).
Here in Ont. we're paying $200 for a crate of 1400 w clips or 1900 {some odd rounds} loose (milsurp).
My geography isn't what it should be....where's speedy creek?

You may as well, it only takes a second. You'll already have everything apart anyway. I use the little tool kit punch to rip it apart. I will inspect it and clean it if i have too. I usually blow everything off with my air compressor once i'm done.
 
the funny thing about this question is you should be asking our shooting buddies if they want us to use the upgraded firing pin. lol. different outcome i'm sure.
 
I have installed Murray's SKS firing pin. After coming back and field stripping, I noticed the firing pin channel was dirty and the pin wouldn't rattle freely in the bolt. To avoid the risk of slamfire (whether this was really a danger or not), I decided to go ahead and replace it with the spring version. It was quick , easy , affordable peace of mind.
