mushroom ID?

Mushrooms in the store = safe. Mushrooms everywhere else = forest decorations.
LOL :) ....I'm with you!! Besides I notice everyone says the same thing ...'yum - fry them in butter!' .... Well if I am going to buy a pound of butter.... I think I'll drop over a few aisles and pick up some mushrooms as well! That way I don't have to play Russian roulette with ' deadly nightshade aminita destroying angels skullcap!!! FFS.

Only one I ever would pick and eat was chanterelles. Sold a few hundred pounds of them to restaurants and hotels too. That was in Europe, they exist in NL but are rather rare where I live. Awesome taste.

They are morals and I have had exactly 3 feeds this spring and still kicking. They are the most easily identifiable and about the only one I will eat wild. There is an apple tree on one of my spring hunting properties that always has a bumper crop and the farmer that owns it loves to see a bag every spring, only mushrooms he will eat. I agree with the don't know-don't eat philosophy but spring morals are something I will not walk past. That and smaller puff balls in the fall.

Morels & puffballs. The only two wild mushrooms we'd eat because we were 'sure' they were safe.
Never been sick and always delicious.
Remember as kid taking a puffball to school for show-and-tell and teacher saying they were poisonous. Oh well, wasn't first time I disagreed with teacher...

More mushrooms for those of us who can identify them I guess.

False morels don't look much like morels in most cases and you can cut them in half and easily ID them.

Looky are you talking about chanterelles? I miss living on VI and picking those

I find it funny how many people are scared of eating a wild mushroom... do berries scare the same folks?

I.D.ing is not rocket science...Guide books can often be found for free and thoroughly describe a dozen or 4 different species...

Many years ago the RCAF issued a book to be carried in all aircraft, entitled, Down but not out. This was at a time when their piston powered a/c may crash in the wilderness and the crews survive.
In talking about what to eat, here is what the book states about berries and mushrooms.
Berries. If you have no idea what they are, eat just one berry. If you don't feel anything wrong after a couple of hours, eat two berries. If all is well after a couple hours, eat a few more and if that doesn't bother you, eat as many as you want.
Mushrooms. Never try a mushroom unless you are absolutely positive of what it is and safe to eat. Even one bite of a poisonous mushroom could kill you, or make you seriously ill.

Plain mushrooms are harder to identify. Plain white are the worst, other than giant puffs. There are several white edibles along with several white amanitas. Sometimes referred to as "Death Caps" or "Destroying Angels". I wouldn't risk them...

Morels, chantarelles, giant puffs and shaggy manes are far easier to id. The false morel has some ridges, but not nearly as defined as a true morel. The area you've found them in are a big indicator too. There are several online forums or id websites that will have detailed photos and info for positive id.

Chantarelles are specifically coloured and have an odour of apricot. Shaggy manes have no poisonous look a likes but can cause stomach upset if eaten with alcohol, though it's more common with inky caps.

And you can never go wrong with fried in butter...
