Hey guys, it's a long shot but does anyone in the Muskoka area have a bit of Moose meat available. I have a guest from overseas who is dead set on trying some. If possible I could meet up this afternoon. Please let me know asap, it would mean a lot to them on their once in a lifetime trip to Canada. Thanks

you could try Muskoka Meats in Gravenhurst

They have a web sight

From their web page

Muskoka Meats buys only the finest wild game meat from Southern Ontario. While it is illegal to sell actual wild game meat, there are a number of farmers who run game reserves and raise domestic game for your pleasure. Wapiti (Elk), Bison, Wild Boar, Venison and Caribou to name a few are available fresh periodically and usually available frozen.

you can't buy it , it is illegal

Maybe you could gift them something in exchange

Gifting something in exchange would still be buying it, just not with cash. I think the only way he can legally get real wild moose meat is if someone was willing to give him some pro bono.

Farm raised moose doesn't really count either, yes its the same animal but without living its life in the wild it doesn't taste the same. Then there is the conservation perspective where penned game animals are potential disease vectors that put the wild populations at risk...

To my knowledge, there are no farm raised moose in Canada. Some zoos have them, but moose are very hard to raise in captivity. They're not like deer or elk.

Fair enough. I'm not sure one way or the other, but I do know the whole process of raising game animals in pens is not a good one from a conservation perspective. And yeah, the Vancouver Zoo has some moose...

Cavallino's of Toronto, sells fine horse meat, that could fool anyone who has never tried moose(or horse) before. It's the thought that counts.

It's only the slow horses that are sold for meat.

Slow horses? You mean horses that do not do well at the track? Because that is not possible. The horses at the track are injected with all sorts of things that are not fit for humans, these would have to be purposely bred for slaughter and that is not done.

Take a drive by the Ft McLeod Ab meat plant and see the 12-1500 horses in the pens.

Horse meat? I thought raising horses for meat was no longer done.

Check out any horse auction and the meat buyers are all in attendance. Smoked horse meat is available on many deli counters in areas big and small. All perfectly legal and above board. What would you have done with the thousands of horses bred each year, many by hobby farms etc. that have no future care??

I'd eat horse without any 2nd thoughts. Too many folk here in NA equate horses with pets that should receive some sort of special status.
