must be doing something wrong

For those getting a 77/357, there's a magazine modification you may want to do for smooth operation.
See lotek's post here
Also, let me know if you know a source of spare magazines. Preferably in stock.

I know it's not exactly fair to compare it to a rifle in another chambering but, I have a Voere rifle in 30-06. It pretty much does the same thing, three shots in close succession, that impact very close with the prefered ammo & forget then about distant shots until the barrel cools down. It's got a light barrel, and it's only just 19inches in length.

Pretty short answer...If you were to elaborate, that would help the original poster get an answer to his question..An answer like ''STRESS'' might leave him going ''Huh''...

this is true and i got thinkin after i posted.. stress in a barrel will cause it to pull more to one side or the other when different tempatures are reached.
HOWEVER if it shots well on the three and let it rest for 5 mins and cool down to cold barrel and it shots great again your fine.

two things to try :
one: load it one at a time then fire it 5 times repeating this pattern. if it shows simar targets as previos targets you elimated everthing but the bolt and barrel.( put one in fire, put one in fire..)

two: wedge some forend pressure. something like a piece of cardboard so the stock is pushing up on it and see what happens

What exactly are you trying to do? Develop a hunting load? Plinking perhaps? You never did indicate. If it's hunting, then you're already set and ready to go. Your (3) shot groups prove the rifle and ammo are already accurate for the task at hand. If it's accurate plinking you're after, consider shooting cast bullet loads instead of jacketed. Better yet, shoot low velocity .38 Spl. target loads instead of .357 Magnum.

As others have said, your barrel is heating up and that's the likely root cause of what's going on. Anything you can do to minimize the amount of heat generated, the longer it takes to over-heat the barrel.

I can shoot cast lead .38 Spl. loads in my S&W 686 all day long and it shows no appreciable signs of over-heating. Fire a few cylinders of .357 Magnum with high velocity 125gr. jacketed bullets and it becomes very toasty warm.

I purchased a spare magazine from "snapshots" in Quebec, they are the warranty service centre for Ruger! They had to order it in, but didn't take long & I found it to be pricey at about $65 bucks.

The one that came with the rifle has the logo stamped on the bottom of the mag,.....

but not the extra one I ordered! Oh well, at least I can tell them apart....

I read this to be a common criticism on other forums about the price of spare magazines for these guns. Perhaps in time they will come down....
