Must Have a Savage 99

I only have two. Both in .300 savage. I always thought that one in 7mm-08 would be handy. Now I have my eye on one in .284 Win. I think I'll but it.

I did not know they made the 99 in 284. Is it as tough to find as hen's teeth? Are they around, and can they be had at a reasonable price?

Thanks

I just picked up a 99e in .308 winchester, cracked stock repaired quite nicely, at least 95% blue, honest wear and overall very good condition. Nice trigger pull and function, in the 1,020,000 serial range.

My first lever of any sort, I always thought I would buy a Marlin or Winnie in 30-30 but I really liked this one, just felt good.

I have to say though I find the lever loop smallish, I don't have enormous hands either. Do others feel the same?

The savage 99 was produced in 15 different calibers. The 284 is a harder one to find and does command a premium over the common calibers. Here is what the 99 was factory produced in:

22-250
22 HP
243
250-3000 (250 sav)
25-35
284 WIN
7mm-08
300 Sav
30-30
303 sav
308 WIN
32-40
358
375
38-55

I only have one... a pre-million serial number 99F in .308 Win.

NAA.

I have a 99F, also in .308, the only lever that I would consider putting a scope on. KD

I used to have a .307 Winchester lever with iron sights for bush work but it could be a little lacking if a long shot presented itself. Tube mag and flatnosed bullets. I switched to a 99c in .308 and even put a low power scope on it with see thru mounts. The iron sights are tru glows now for my older vision. I took the best deer of my life a couple of years ago (in the avatar) with that rifle in the bush and filled my buddy's tag party hunting as well two days later in the bush. It's great. I would love to have one in .243 as well but they seem to be like hen's teeth too. Anyone have one or want one in .308 instead?
The featherweight is my favorite.
I think that if they brought this rifle back they would have to offer it with some newer calibers like 260, 22-250, 7mm-08, .223. The standby's like 243, 308, and bring back the 250. If longer shells/pressures are no problem then why not 30-06, 270, and 25-06. That's more than enough and that kind of selection would help make it a success. I think a choice of two grades might be interesting too.

be aware that you lose a round due to the incremental width of the 284 cartridge- way back when , i looked into a thing called a 30-284, but decided against it for that reason

ALFREDS, there are lots of 99s to be had right now for a reasonable price. As a bonus they have superior workmanship to anything they might make today at Savage. In the gun industry people have clamoured for the reintro of old favourites and historically when they do after an initial burst of purchases, NOBODY BUYS IT!!

I'd pay that in a heartbeat if it as a model EG or an R but a model C, naw, can't see it, maybe if it was a 99% gun with the box.

You can't go crapping on a guy though, the odd case ya someone might be out to find some stupid sucker to buy it but most of the time it's just someone that just doesn't know what a gun is worth.

I get a kick out of the guys that put a $20 BSA or Weaver scope on their gun and figure they can up the price of it by $100, ya right.

Grandfather left me a mint-condition .300 savage model 99 no scope, no holes drilled..... he used it his entire life for bush hunting. Left me an old lee-loader and lotsa reloads too......

I need to learn how to use that loader some time :)

those loaders are easy to use.
best advice is get a wooden mallet ;)

Yup, very easy to use. Its actually what I use right now to reload until I get space to install my press. It makes very accurate reloads. If you want, contact me and I will mail you a copy of the instructions, or you can check the Lee website, they probably have them there.

As for a hammer, I found a hard plastic tipped hammer(the ones with the removable heads) works best.

Nawww not crappin on him. Its worth what ever someone is willing to pay. I just found it funny.

Maddog's 303 sav

It's mine now and it ain't for sale. I bought a sav99 from MD, had it out today with handloads using 170gr RN and IMR 4895 vel 2130, 5 shot group measured 1&5/8" at 100M. I've scoped this with my own mounts using the tang and the rear sight dovetail,(Sooo no D/T). Might take it out on a few trips this fall.

People need to stop talking about them so prices drop down abit.. I'm keeping an eye out for a 99f in 308 for a bush gun, but not paying the prices people are asking right now

That 99c 243 is gone. I was talking to the guy when it sold. Has not said what he got for it tho.Wah:(

As much as I wanted one in that caliber, no way I was paying that much. I am guessing since everyone is saying how rare they are, it keeps pushing the price up, yet this is the second .243 in one week that has been up for sale, so it proves they are out there.
