Hey
I am just starting out and am wondering if there are any must have rifles, for targets and hunting?

Yes!, the ones you want.
But on a serious note, what kind of hunting are you planing and what types of target shooting are you into?
Hard to go wrong investing in a good .22lr cheap to shoot, lets you practice the fundementals and is a great small game getter.
Other then that lever action carbine .30-30, and a Savage precision carbine in .308 winchester with a good 4-12 scope.

1. Ruger 10/22, great for target practice. a bazillion different accesories are made for it so you can customize it to your preference. can be used for hunting most small game.

2. Winchester model 1894 in 30-30. it can kill most big game animals and can reach out to 200 or more yards. Only take distance shots if you practice alot with it and can be absolutely certain of your marksmanship.

3. Remington 870 Shotgun. You can get them for relativly cheap and in most gauges, although it's most common in 12 or 20 gauge. I've had one since i was 12 and i don't regret buying it.

4. You'll want to look into a good rifle for shooting big game at distances past 100 yards. Check out the Hunting and Sporting Arms forum to get a feel for whats out there. A magnum rifle may not be right for you at the present as you'll have to get used to recoil and find out if you have the dreaded "flinch".

These are probably the guns i'd buy if i was starting out all over again. But please, Take your time and find something that is right for you! Don't rush into purchases because you may regret them later. Good Luck

M1 Garand

X2!!!!!!!! Greatest milsurp rifle ever made and will make you smile every time you shoot it.

For hunting I would recommend a Browning X-bolt. I'm so impressed with mine in all ways and think it's possibly one of the best hunting rifles going.

Welcome to the insanity. :D

Lee Enfield for sure! a piece of history.

A .22LR of some sort (ruger 10/22 perhaps) is mandatory for loads of cheap fun.

And a shot-gun, preferably a 12 gauge because the ammo is inexpensive and easy to find.

You need a Lee Enfield .303, doesn't matter if it's sporterized. You can use that for hunting if you want. You're going to need a .22lr, probably a 10/22 Ruger. Some kind of shotgun, most people have remington 870's. Then you're going to want some form of precision and/or tactical rifle like an AR180b, Norinco M305, cz858-2, etc.

It should cost no more than $200.00 for your Enfield, $300 for your 10/22, and $500 for your shotgun. That's $1000.00, then you can spend anywhere from $400 for the M305 to $1400 for the AR180b, the CZ858 is around $700.00

1894 30-30 and a Lee Enfield. I think you should play Oh Canada and waste 200 bucks at the range when you get them :) That's my plan when the PAL goes through.
