Peanut butter for a bate. Caught more then 30 (!) squirrels. Find their usual route and place the trap on it or close. Make sure to put the bait BEHIND the pedal. Keep setting the trap untill it will stay empty for several day, but do replace the bait so it stays fresh and smells with peanuts. They like it crunchy with chunks.
Good luck.

i,ve used the same method years ago at the hunt camp, only i used a pop can instead of the bottle..
no matter what ,it worked like a charm..
BTW..if you use this method to get rid of pest..make sure you are around to scoop out the rodents now and then;)
the last time i used this method..i was not able to make it back up to camp for a few months...
talk about a smelly soup:eek:

Bear bait:D

I wonder if you could rig up enough 12 volts in series to take a bear?

Naw, I'd have to have an electrical permit to have that set up in the bush.:p

But it works

If you haven't already done so, I'd highly recommend you check your cats & dog for parasites! Squirrels are notorious for being lousy and absolutely full of creepy/crawlies that happily will jump ship to your cat or dog, who will then share them with you and your furniture/carpets, etc...! I deliberately keep the squirrel population low around my house to keep the cat from catching anymore of the little tree rats for this reason.

Sound advice,
And we are always using flea treatment/deworming medicine/and checking for ticks when grooming our dogs/cats. Trust me, they are well cared for! They even get some lobster in the spring lol

...
I was in Halifax all day today, hopefully tomorrow i'll have some time to try to rig up the bucket trap thing. See what kinda stuff i have to work with.
We gotta feed our chickens and pigs twice a day, so checking on the trap ain't no problem

My mother is a dog groomer and worked at a vet clinic. If someone told you there are no fleas in Canada they are stupid(people tried to tell me that before, and it annoys the hell out of me). I know for a fact, there are fleas(I've seen them and even looked at them under a microscope) on PEI as well as ticks. Ticks are rarer but I have seen a few. But I also know many people who don't use flea treatments and never had a problem. Its just that since my cat is a mouser and my mother grooms dogs in the house that have fleas - we feel it necessary to treat them.

Wonderful conversation you guys are having. Liked the bucket trick (I've never had to fend off a horde of mice, but I do like that tactic). Liked the snares on a pole trick. Like the pellet gun recommendations. Not happy to learn that snap traps and sticky paper aren't working for you.

My only contribution is, the early bird gets the worm, the second mouse gets the cheese.

Lone wolf, Mumptia is from a little further north then PEI.
Yea, thats why i put the 'on pei' part. I can't really say for sure anywheres else, and i didn't want to give that impression. But just cause someone hasn't had a problem doesn't mean the possibility isn't there.
...

Right now i have that plastic bottle over a big fish bin. And some PB out in the open thats been there for a day or two now. And i haven't see anything that suggests a squirrel been around. Hopefully they smartened up after I took some shots at them and left. Unfortantly the barn isn't designed to be plugged up, so I guess i'll have to keep an eye out.

If I had to guess, I'd say that our growing season for that bug isn't long enough or its too cold for too long making our area out of the fleas rangeland

I'll have to phone our vet here and ask.

That said, no one I know treats for fleas. We have ticks, the moose show us that from time to time.

Take some fishing line, and string it through some peanuts. Then tie the line to a hammer. As they come to the peanuts, they will get held up trying to break them free. Helium baloons are non-restricted. Try tying them to a lawnchair, and float safely above the peanuts. Then drop an anvil from 1500M. You will want to tie a rope to the anvil to bring it back up to you.

we had a minnow trapline and they were getting in and making a mess of our bread. by dad got me a .20 cal benjamin sheridan pellet gun (i think rated at around 1000fps in its time) and my lab and i took too it. we shot 100's of the buggers. this was well before the gun registration days though. i think 495 fps out of the non-registerable pellet guns these days is a little light for longer shots but they should get the point. also, you can probably bring it to a gunsmith and they can change out the o-rings and spring to increase the speed marginably. get the pointed pellets too, they make a difference. on another note, in addition to everything else this gun killed the most impressive was my brother shot a fox with this pellet gun, one shot between the eyes.

My cat had flees in the first year we had it here in the Laval (north of Montreal, Quebec). A simple Havahart flee collar for $5.00 is sure worth the money.

I treat my dog every month for fleas, heart worms, ear mites, mange mites, hook worms, and all kinds of other parasitic infestations. Costs me $20.00+ a month for the darn treatment. I only give the treatment during the 6 warm months of the year.

Just because many don't bother spending money on their "pets", doesn't mean that fleas, heart worm, and other parasites don't exist. I wouldn't worry with housebound interior pets, but mine go outside, meet other animals and are up at the cottage on weekends where tall grass and creapy crawlers are everywhere. Not to mention the animal feces from ducks, beaver, deer, etc that can contain parasites.
(My dog thinks fresh deer s**t is like chocolate! Freaken gross!)

Also, at our cottage up north, half the wolves shot had mange (from mange mites). I wouldn't want my dog with that in my house!
