Must own cartridges that belong in every collection?

I must be misinterpreting the OP's question, but I thought he was referring to cartridge collecting, not rifles in particular chamberings.

Be that as it may, when I first started collecting cartridges 40+ years ago, I wanted everything, every different cartridge, every headstamp, every different bullet in each load, then different primers, &c., &c., &c. Fast forward a number of years & I finally came to the conclusion that that just wasn't going to happen in my lifetime.

I first specialized in Canadian, British and European cartridges, then solely British. After a time, they got darned expensive & harder to find, especially as the older folks' collections got scattered and fewer and fewer people were collecting.

Probably the easiest [& cheapest] would be to start with current cartridges [hint, follow C.O.T.W. divisions] & go from there. The cartridges are relatively easy to locate & much cheaper than the older ones and if you find that your interest wanes, you're not out an awful lot of money that cannot easily be recouped.

I might (& quite likely am) off the OP's intended topic, but that's my $0.02Cdn.

ahhhhhhhh

collecting .......

Now i get it!!

With hunting in mind:

1) 12 ga
2) 22 LR
3) One of the following: 6.5x55, 6.5 CM, 260 Rem, 270 Win, 7x57, 7-08, 308 win. These can be used for occasional varmints unless you want to have a specialized varmint, 22-250 today. (class 2 game)
4) 30-06 (class 2 and 3 game)
5) 9.3x62 or 375 H&H, for moose and big bears.

If I had to keep one hunting, do it all rifle, it would be a 30-06 or a 9.3x62.

What are some of the standouts in the 30cal, 338 and >40cal families?

30cal - 30.06, 308, 300WM or one of the new offerings like 300PRC?

338cal - is the 338WM the way to go here if I don't want to step up to 338 Lapua?

>40cal - my only current big bore is a 45-70. What others should I consider with a little more oomph?

If I had to live with one rifle to do everything, it would be my 7x57 TS Ruger M77 with my Lee Loader, a few pounds of Varget, a few hundred 162 grain bullets and half a brick of LR primers. Of course, that isn't going to happen.

Just pick them up as you locate them and discover some more that you didn't know of, ...... it can be a life-long endeavour and you still won't have every one. I've been picking them up for 1/2 a century and am still short a lot.
