Muzzle brake and velocity???

I like using a brake when shooting lots developing loads etc or on my M1A for quick shots but it's a pain in the a## keeping a good cheek weld for target shooting with the muffs on. I can never shoot as good or comfortable with muffs and plugs don't cut it with a brake

Not sure how a brake would increase velocity? There is no rifling in it, the hole is bigger than the muzzle and it's meant to push the gas pressure sideways faster hence taking the recoil out of the gun. I read once that the don't make guns louder but just direct the gases in a different direction making it seem loader. All I know for sure it's that it defenityl seems louder when shooting with one on the gun.

I had a flashider, from iron eagle tactical, I forgot to put on hearing protection ,while using it ,one day.
My ears were ringing for 20 minutes .
I think the flash hider is worst than the brake, for loudness.

Back on topic though, I only asked this question, cause im bored out of my tree.

Had a look at the Ruger website and found the muzzle brake system which includes the brake, weight and thread protector. The fittings shown have flats for a wrench. The brake on my rifle doesn't have these so it might be an older system?? There is a 338 thread protector available but it's blued so I will have to contact Ruger to get the right fitting for my rifle.

To unscrew it put a screwdriver through the brake ports and twist.

I had a couple of Badger Micro FTE on a pair of 16" Rem 700 bolt guns... one 223 and one 308. The 223 was actually worse then the 308, you could feel the concussion on your face shooting it.
The 223 now wears one of Simon's linears, 308 still has the badger.

Who wears hearing protection when hunting?

Yes, exactly.

If my new rifle is to be a range rifle only, the comfort of a brake is a good idea. If it is to be a hunting rifle, I either hunt with electronic muffs or unscrew the brake.

For sure - need to have unimpaired hearing in order to listen for sounds that indicate your quarry is approaching through the timber.

Hello, I am putting a 20 inch barrel on and am wondering if adding a muzzle brake ,would increase velocity.

The only thing that increases with a muzzle brake is the aggravation of the people sitting on either side of you at the range.

When you sit next someone using a muzzle break you are hit with far more blast and noise.

I have even had people complain at the range about my AR15 carbine and its muzzle break.

And if you look around match grade AR15 barrels are not threaded for a muzzle break, and many think the break effects accuracy.

First sprayed it with penetrating oil and got the goofy thing off no problem. The rifle feels way lighter with it removed.

Measures 0.5605" so I would bet dollars to donuts the threads are 9/16 UNF. However, the Ruger 338 OEM thread protector fitting is 1/2x32 so I will need a custom thread protector. Bummer. :(
