Muzzle brake and velocity???

I absolutely loathe Muzzle brakes, so try to avoid them.
If heavy recoil is a factor, I will use other methods to tame it, if at all possible.
But if you want/need a brake, fill your boots.
Any decent machinist could make you up a cap for that Ruger. Dave.

I have cut the threads off and recrowned 1/2 doz barrels that had brakes.......for other people, the best thing that can happen to a brake in my opinion. The only braked rifle that I own is my 50 BMG, with obvious good reason. I have several Magnaported rifles though and they are a touch louder for bystanders but doesn't seem to increase noise levels for the shooter. It doesn't really reduce recoil as much as it just redirects it for less muzzle jump, which is a definite plus when hunting.

For your question BM65......no a muzzle brake will neither increase nor decrease your velocity from a given barrel length. No brake obviously seals the bullet to the bore, which is what must happen to use the expanding gases to increase velocity. Conversely, nothing you do after the bullet leaves the crown, short of physical interference with the bullet, will slow it down at a greater rate than the air resistance.

A 9/16" UNF nut fits the muzzle threads on my 338. Just need to remove the flats on a lathe and make a thin collar. An economical thread protector for about 50 cents.

I'm with you. I've never used a brake and never want to. 300win mag is most I can handle at a bench rest and I'm ok with that. As I get older I'm ok with wearing anything on my shoulder to help with recoil when at bench rest but never seen the need to use a brake...no need to make a gun louder JMHO

The bigger question is: Is the recoil so bad that I need a brake and the noise problem to anyone beside me?

I have never shot a braked rifle without wearing my earmuffs, so don't know if a brake is a noise issue to the shooter. If it is, I would have to give that serious consideration before opting for the brake.

Try to shoot a lapua without a break just for fun lmao!! On the other side you will have to double up on hear pro.
