Muzzle brake bullet clearance?

How much bullet clearance should you have on a muzzle brake?
Im putting one on my .40 Beretta CX4 and it has only about .012 on each side right now.
Thats too close imo but what do i know.
Almost drilled it out but figured i would ask the experts first.
 
That's not close enough IMHO. The closer the better.

When I build brakes for my personal firearms I try to keep it down to .002 in all the way around. Makes for a much more efficient brake. I also don't like the socalled expansion chamber between the barrel muzzle and the brake muzzle. Makes for some very precise alignment but it's worth the extra effort.
 
Between 0.020" and 0.030" is the industry standard. If installing a pre-bored brake then I normally go 0.030" but if threading and installing the brake in the lathe then as small as possible is better.

This.

If the bore of the brake is PERFECTLY concentric and parallel to the axis of the bore of the barrel, a few thousandths is all you need. If it's only one or neither of those things, tolerances need to be opened up to prevent bullet-brake contact.

12 thou on each side is 24 thou clearance on the bullet, if the brake is centered on the bore... it should be accurately bored out while attached, not drilled out.
