Muzzle brake question?

Hey guys, just have a quick question about a muzzle brake... I've never had a gun with one, but Ive been toying with the idea of putting one on my Remington 700 in 338 RUM. Is it worth doing this? I can handle the recoil and shoot the gun accurately, but Id say shooting would be limited to 20-30 shots before I started getting tender lol. If I do go ahead and put one on will it effect accuracy or velocity?

I know lots of guys hate them with a passion lol, some guys love them, just looking for the info thats all :)

rrecoil will be reduced big time, and accuracy may go up as there will be way less muzzle hop, velocity wont change

cons - it will be loud! but that depends who u ask haha, iv got a brake on my .338LM and i dont think its loud to the shooter, but dont stand beside it :/
 
I had one put on a 300 rum shooting 210's and was expecting a reduction in recoil but was actually really surprised by how much reduction there was. As long as you never expect to shoot without hearing protection go for it. At the range I always move my table so that my muzzle is not under the roof and its also in front of anyone near me and not parallel with them.
Makes shooting the bigger rifles way mos fun
 
There has been a multitude of threads on muzzle brakes, the general consensus you are going to get is, they are really loud, and disturbing to others. Some will
say if you can't handle the recoil don't shoot as big of calibers.

I have one on one of my rifles, and am installing one on another. The reduction in recoil is very nice. Yes, they greatly increase the noise/blast behind the muzzle and especially to the sides. Personally, I rarely shoot in the company of others so bothering anyone else is not a concern. If there does happen to be someone else shooting, or watching I offer them plugs or muffs to double up the hearing protection they have, and I pre-warn them of the effects of the brake.

I remove my for hunting, as I rarely use hearing protection while hunting (I know, I know, I should) Removing the brake will change the point of impact as compared to shooting with it installed, so sighting your rifle in to account for the change is necessary.

Personally I love shooting with the brake.
 
I never use the brake on my Coyote's as with .308 the increased blast/noise isn't worth it but on my .338 Lapua it is, in my view, essential. I used to have a .300WM in AICS 1.5 and that was OK as the AICS really handles recoil well but, given a choice, that is the caliber where I would start to use a brake.
 
Hmmm so I guess the next question would be who around the Ottawa area can install one? or order one in? Not really sure what to look for or what the best brake would be? Any ideas?
 
"HUGE" difference with that much bigger noise. Make sure to double Wrap your ears @ the range and always carry muffs on mountain if you use it for hunting..
All depends on the contour of your barrel for many different brakes but the best way is to get hold of any gunsmith near you and he will install it or make one for you. Brakes usually runs around $60-$100 + installations.
 
it doesn't have to be very noisy, with deflector build in, mine you still need to wear hearing protector, with a proper build muzzle brake, you can see the round hitting at 100.

Gun Boy Makes his own so ask him to get you one in lighter contour and get gunsmith to thread it for you. it sure would like like a Big dildo if you go too big on muzzle brake with factory barrel.
