Muzzle Brakes Area 419 vs Insite Arms vs APA Fat Bastard

Yeah I wish they had a 3/4x24 .885 dia

Ask them and perhaps they'll oblige?

I've now had significant time behind an Insite Heathen 5-port on my .300 Norma Mag and all I can say is wow, is it ever effective! I'm going to do some phonescope footage comparing a 5-port on a .300Nm to a 3-port (which I already found to be quite effective) on a similarly setup and similar weight .308.

Improvement in recoil reduction by increasing the surface area of the baffles depends on the cartridge. A 300NM has a lot of gas coming out the barrel to push on the brake, hence going from 3 to 5 ports makes a big difference. A large volume of gas will take longer to dissipate then a small volume, so the further away baffles, 4 and 5, have a greater effect. A 308 has roughly half the case capacity, so the gas pressure dissipates quickly and doesn't push on 4-5 as much, relative to the first 3.

Comparing a 5 port on a 300NM and a 3 port on a 308 is an apples and oranges situation. A better test would be testing both brakes on the same rifle, if possible.

It all depends on what you're trying to test... in my case I'm looking to validate my "belief" that the 5-port on my 300NM tames recoil down to the same (or less) than the felt recoil on my similarly setup .308 with a 3-port (both rifles are basically identical except for the action and the Norma has a 3" longer barrel and therefore weighs an extra 1.5lbs).

For what it's worth, there's more than twice as much powder in one of my .300NM cases than in one of my .308 cases ;)
