I have a Tikka with a heavy barrel that has been threaded for a brake. Would it be possible to install a brake myself, or should I take it to a smith to have one fitted?

Make sure the break I.D. is large enough to pass your caliber bullet. Seems obvious, but.................

If you have access to a muzzle brake reamer of the proper caliber and the threads match and the brake indexs properly no problem, as Joe mentioned make CERTAIN you have clearance through the brake or bad things happen when the gun is fired. Even though the barrel is threaded I personally would check the shank for true and also cut the back of the brake true so that alignment is assured.
Then line ream the brake to be sure the bullet does not touch anywhere whilst exiting the barrel

Thanks for the info, guys. The barrel is threaded for a Holland brake, so I'm off to a good start. I have a lathe here at home so indexing shouldn't be too much of a challenge (shave a few thou' off the back of the brake).

How much clearance would you recommend?

Locktite or not?

It may be a little more involved than shaving a few thou off the back of the brake. The Holland brake has specific locations for the end of the barrel where it projects into the brake, barrel and brake may both require shaving or the barrel brake shoulder itself may require setting back also, there are instructions with the brake you will have to follow, it is a very good brake by the way I would say it is my favorite from all of them. It will also have to be indexed.
