Muzzle Climb

No idea on an AR but on a bolt action .223, about 1/4 inch jump off a sandbag?
Why no flashhider or brake? Would look weird on an AR.

I have a gun up in the EE for trade and one of the offers I received was for an AR without anything on the barrel. To top things off, the barrel isn't even threaded and the closest smith to me would be well over 1000 kms away. Given the logistical issues, if I took the trade, it would remain unthreaded and without a brake or flash hider.

Guessing it must be a custom build. It's a .223 AR so no matter what, it won't kick or rise much. If it's a custom precision type barrel and you like that sort of thing, then go for it. But personally, I think an AR looks incomplete without something hanging off the nose.

Not comparing apples to apples I know but the HK SL8s don't have any sort of muzzle device on the end of the barrel

Depends on your shooting form. It's a 223 so it's easy to control with no muzzle device.
If on the other hand you plan to shoot competitively then a proper muzzle brake will cut a few seconds off your time.

Apparently you guys haven't shot a gun with a muzzle brake on it. The difference is night and day. One of the best purchases for a rifle of 223 type.
Highly recommended, if you're into double tapping, etc. You'll never go back.

The OP is talking about potentially buying an AR that has no muzzle device at all and the barrel is unthreaded. He is also 1000s of KMs from a gunsmith. He may or may not be doing the work to change things himself so is wondering about the muzzle rise of such a gun.
Totally agree that muzzle brakes are awesome and negate muzzle climb which really speeds up the double taps and in competition. But, at the moment, it seems the OP doesn't have that option if he trades for this particular AR.

Hope its not a cut down longer barrel. 14.5" unthreaded is an odd one. Not a US "ban" vintage, being 14.5".
Unless you are wanting to shoot rapidly, there is no issue.
If you want to get it threaded, remove the barrel, and mail it to a 'smith.

The rifle in question is a new and unfired ATI AR with a stock 14.5" barrel. However, as much as this thread has been informative, I have decided to pass on the offer for the AR. I traded my rifle for something else.

.223 is almost nothing.

I used my 14.5 build with no muzzle device for a while, the muzzle climb is around half a inch if you shoot standing with very very very very relaxed pose.

If you shoot with aggressive C-clamp/thumb over the bore pose the muzzle climb is almost 0, but that depends on shooter's physical capability I think.

14.5 barrel with no muzzle device has very bright and beautiful muzzle flash. :)
