I'm looking for a cheap and cheerful muzzle device to go on my Bushmaster M17S. It will be ordered off Brownells and delivered to a US location, and properly exported along with the rifle itself. Just wondering what is recommended for about $40 or less. The barrel is 21-1/2" long and the weight of the rifle is approximately 8 lbs.

Why not just pick up an A2 in Canada? It's cheap, cheerful and works.

Where would I find one of those? I did some quick searching and didn't really see anything.

And a question about the A2, does it provide any compensation? I've heard/read/seen that it is one of the very best flash eliminators, but have also heard various opinions of whether or not there is any compensation.

I'm still (ironically, I guess) a cheap bastard. $40 was my extreme high end, but if a <$10 A2 will do it then I'm fine with that too. I guess it's kinda hypocritical to spend $1600 on a rifle and be too cheap to buy a proper brake or even proper sights! Oh well, my Sightron 10-50 may have to take residence until I can afford something more suitable.

I put a WTB ad up and had a few replies in a few days. They come standard on many ARs, and since lots of guys get a fancy muzzle device straight away, they have A2s hanging around in the parts bin.

The A2 does have have pretty good compensation. It's also waaaaay quieter than any brake / comp. There is a comparative review on the Vuurwapen blog where it shows how it stacks up, and it's surprisingly good. I'd say until you know exactly what whizz-bang muzzle device you want, you should stick with the A2. I've tried a few high-end muzzle devices, and I'm sticking with the A2.
