Muzzle Devices, crush washers or jam nuts

Fella's, if you've ever looked inside your muzzle device, you'll have noted that there is plenty of room between the end of your barrel, and the inside depth of the device. A small chamber if you will. And this chamber is greater if you use a jam nut, vs a crush washer because the crush washer allows the device down further on the threads.

So, my question is, is there any known advantage or disadvantage regarding how far down the barrel a device is mounted, or distance from the crown?

Not sure about the performane of the device as far as how far they are threaded on, but after installing a few on rifles using crush washers I started using shims. And I prefer using shims to time them and get them threaded on as far as possible. The Surfire muzzle devices I have bought came with shim kits and a little tube of rocksett included and I liked that install process personally

No.

The only reason to use jam nuts or shims is to maintain bore alignment of the muzzle device. Important for tight compensators or for mounting suppressors.

Crush washer are fine for everything else.

somewhere in the gun universe someone is busy turning the flash hider in and out trying to improve group size. the only way it works is with a jam nut.

If possible, I thread it far enough on so that there are no exposed threads left inside the muzzle device. No sense having a carbon trap there and it sets up pretty hard over time. For devices needing timing shims work nicely, but have used crush washers as well. Not a fan of jamb nuts unless the barrel profile is very light and doesn't have a pronounced shoulder at base of muzzle threads.
