Ruger 10/22 Target Tactical. I have developed some sort of deposit around the muzzle that nothing I've tried seems to remove...

Is that just an effect of the heat of the flash on the finish, or is it something I should be able to brush off with the right brushes and solvents? I haven't noticed any penalty to accuracy, but I don't want to use harsh scratching brushes if there's no reason to do so.

A quick twist with superfine (0000) steel wool and solvent should get rid of it. It is just buildup from the condensing gasses etc. Eventually if it gets thick enough it will effect accuracy just like any rough crown will. I always remove it with each barrel cleaning on my .22's. About every 1000 rounds or so.

A bit of Hoppe's No.9 on a rag will gets most of it off, anything more stubborn gets the thumbnail treatment. Once clear, another wipe with No.9 and a thing coat of whatever I wipe the barrel down with before going back into the safe. I've never had to use anything abrasive.

In my case, I'm talking about residue (looks the same) and not marring on a surface finish. Don't know if what you're experiencing IS a deposit (build-up) or...a simple discoloration on the finish you can't feel when you run your finger over it.

Hmm, thanks guys. I'll have to take a closer look, and try some of these suggestions. Some did come off with some solvent and a rag, but what you see there has stood up to solvent and a toothbrush...that's as aggressive as I've gone so far.

I do kinda like the pattern though ;)

Tested it a bit with something more scrapey (it's a word now) and it seems to come off in small flakes, with some effort. More solvent and soft brushes haven't helped, so I guess I'll have to try abrasives of some kind. I'm just always paranoid about wrecking the finish ;)

"If force doesn't work, you aren't using enough of it." rings true this time...

Carefull with "scrapey" stuff... When I Rust blue guns I use superfine steel wool to card off the rust scale, and it has zero effect on the actual metal. I even get pretty rough with it sometimes and it doesn't take off the bluing, so Im positive the metal is just fine. A lot of people fear the 0000 bulldog, but trust me. Its the best for the tough to remove stuff.
