Muzzle Loader Building Kits

We are looking for a Muzzle Loader building kit....does anyone have any recommendations? We don't want to spend more than $2000 and that includes extra material needed. So far we have looked at one kit from The Hawken Shop. Any help would be much appreciated.

re: Pennsylvania/Kentucky Kit
I purchased a 50 cal percussion cap kit from TVA (Tenessee Velley Arms)
about 5 yrs ago and never put it together.
It is a premium kit and I paid an extra $100 for an "extra select" tiger tail maple full length stock. The lock mechanism is also select

I am now heavily into shotguns and at 68 yrs of age I now realize I'm never going to get it done.

In your opinion is a .50 cal plenty for Deer hunting? My Dad would prefer a .54 Cal for Deer hunting. He only plans to use a Ball.

I might be interested in builing the .50 cal though ;)

Hi,zr2paul. I think the best kits are the ones put out by Jim Chambers. I see you are thinking of a Hawken.Don Stith put togather very nice Hawkens kits,I'm thinking of building his full length flintlock model.His web page is http/donstith.com. You should also go to a forum called americanlongrifles.com there is a lot of top builders there and will answer any questions you may have. I just finished a 20 gauge fowler from a chambers kit 46 inch smooth bore and i am very pleased with it.I built a early Lancaster with parts i got from Fred Miller but more work.Swamped barrel .54 and handles like a dream. Rifle Shop

I would be wary of buying from the Rifle Shop. They have one of the best catalogues with one of the most varied assortment of blackpowder firearms I've ever seen. The problem is that it may take forever for you to receive your parts.
There have been many complaints of long delivery times. Since they sell many one of a kind kits that no one else sells; it makes them very independent.
 
Muzzleloader Kits.John Clark offers kits fo r Pennslvania, Hawken,and English Hunting rifle . I bought one last year for under 1000 . It is Iron mounted, brass was available. These are high quality build kits , not assembly kits. There is a certain amount of tapping drilling and inletting to do. The Clark lock appears to be a Durs Egg copy. Order from Clark Industries/York County gunworks from Tottenham Ontario. He is online. Google him up.

the owner, Matt Denison, guided me through the steps as requiired...all US made quality parts...mine was the NorthWest Trade gun in 62 Cal

I am currently building a kit from track of the Wolf...good service , quality US made Parts...french Tulle fusil de chasse in 62cal...44'' long barrel, walnut stock and brass furniture...a beauty in the making!

Both are nice challenge!

I wish The Rifle Shoppe would get their excrement together and fix the GD website. Turning off the"flash" command on the bold print that shows on every page would be a start.

I much prefer the Track of The Wolf site, and products, and have had great service from them on the few things I have ordered so far.

Drooling over the flintlock kits there. Trying to decide which one, and how much I wanna spend on extras.

With your $2K budget the sky is almost the limit on your choices!

It recently came to my attention that if you build a percussion rifle from parts kits, then register it as homebuilt you are not allowed to sell it. Crazy laws! On the other hand a flintlock rifle requires no registration.
 
There are all sorts of kits, from unfinished versions of production guns, neatly packed in moulded styrofoam trays, to collections of parts which can be used to assemble a quality, historically accurate reproduction. There are also assembled parts sets, ready for final finishing.
Your own personal skill level and confidance are factors. But if your ceiling is $2000, you have lots of choices.
