Howdy.
I used to be into black powder quite a bit about 10 years ago, but have been out of the country, up north where I used a rifle, and out of the scene for about ten years.

I use traditional guns, have hawken repros in 45 and 50 caliber, and will be hunting fall 09 again with them.

Lots has happened since I last hunted. I used black powder and ball, or conical bullets, but alot has changed now.

What are your recommendations for powder and shot in these calibers? Sabots were just beginning to be used when I quit.

I do like the traditional rig, and will never trade my old fashioned guns for a modern inline. Give me your suggestions so I can log in some range time and experiments before the season starts.

Really not much has changed in the traditional guns. The ignition system makes them a poor candidate for many of the new powders and pellets and most have too slow of twist in the riflings for sabots to be all that accurate.

What worked 10 years ago works pretty well the same now. (and 150 years ago too for that matter!)

Most of the new developements are in the inlines and modern stuff. New priming systems and propellants along with new bullets and sabots all the time. These are pretty well a whole seperate thing from the traditional stuff. A shotgun primer is almost a necessity for some of the new powders.

Stick with your tried and true loads. You won't be missing much.

What worked for ya then will be of no problem working for you now.
I plan on strictly using my No.11 caps, round ball & patch for the '09 season.
I might even crack open my can of Goex FFFG instead of the Pyrodex RS....the fact is, I'm going all traditional for '09.....heck..what do I got lose ...
