Got my new hunting rifle

I've been looking at the MDT LSS Chassis for it as well.

I'd love to see a range report and review for this! Im looking at one myself. I had the MVP in 5.56mm and loved it, sold it to get the 308 version.

So is it a painted wood stock or a composite?

I've seen both stated in different reviews.

I will be taking it out to shoot today so i'll update later, The stock is 100% synthetic no wood at all. I have a couple 10 round xcr-m 308 magazines for it that fit snug as a bug in it no wiggle at all, it feeds my practice 308 rounds nice. My initial thoughts on this gun are - Man, I need to go shoot this !

I had to go out and buy some low rings for it and now the scope sits very nice now with minimal clearance as you can see in the picture above. My new Vortex Crossfire II scope is very nice as well I can't wait to see how it all comes together when I put some rounds downrange later. Even got my shipment of Tulammo 308 in last night so I can shoot a lot of that and I have a box of hornady and nosler hunting rounds to try out too.

Gonna be a fun Saturday :)

I'm interested to hear your review after shooting this rifle.

This is one that I am considering for my dual purpose range and hunting rifle.

Thanks for the clarification on the stock, couldn't imagine they would use a wood stock on this model.

mine was painted wood

sold it before firing a round

poor quality machining, fit and finish, very loose and sloppy/notchy bolt, sloppy mag lock up (actually fell out), If you insert the mag with the bolt open it actually goes in past the lock and will jam up the rifle

MVP Series Patrol Rifles are housed in durable birch wood stocks painted with a coarse black texture

black textured wood stock.

Don't know what to say about yours they obviously made changes because mine is brand new from Wanstalls and IT IS a 100% synthetic stock, I was using two of the Robinson Arms XCR-M 10 round pistol magazines and they fit in solid and I put magazines in on a closed bolt and the bolt cycled.

I was having too good of a time today I forgot to get any pictures :( sorry

I sighted in my scope then the iron sights then I just started shooting and 60 rounds later my shoulder was getting sore so I didn't try to shoot for grouping today because I knew I was pulling rounds.

I did notice 2 little things first the iron sights took a bit to sight in because there is no indents for moving them right or left you just have to loosen the screw and move it freehand and see what that did so that took longer and more rounds then it should have to line up and the up down setting same thing there are indents tho for that but I shot like 15 rounds before I felt the iron sights were good. Good thing I had some cheaper ammo to blow through.

Which leads me to the second issue the Tulammo is steel cased and the magazines are metal so there is some extra friction there you had to use a good solid push on the bolt to feed, My Tavor I use polymer PCV-50 magazines and I don't see that issue with the Tulammo its just steel casing on metal magazines is all adding some extra friction. Feeding brass rounds I didn't have an issue they cycled noticeably smoother out of the metal XCR-M magazines.

Now that I got it broke in a bit next time i'll shoot for accuracy and remember to get some pics. Overall tho I am happy with my purchase and I think it will suit my needs for a compact light hunting rifle that can take big game.

Take the stock off and you will see, even take the screws out of the butt pad. You will see the black texture is just a coating. I find it unlikely they changed the tooling in the last few months, all the MVP stocks are coated wood other than the laminate versions. It is well documented and those links were just the first two on google.

If the stock was synthetic it would not be as heavy as it is.

Thanks for posting this. I like the "idea" of this rifle and the features but I've never been a fan of Mossberg ANYTHING so very leery on the MVT. If it were getting consistent good reports I'm open mixed enough to overlook any Mossberg bias but so far there's as many bad reviews as good.

Have no doubt your rifle is wood. Seen too many reviews stating its painted wood. That bugs me for this particular rifle design.

Too bad Savage didn't implement the same mag idea with their Hog Hunter model. Would be a real winner imo.

As I stated IT'S NOT WOOD ! :) Unless your idea of what's wood differs greatly from mine that is a 100% synthetic stock like I said.

Interesting, I would be interested in knowing when mossberg changed the production on the rifles. They may have improved on all the other issues I had with mine that forced me to sell it without even firing a round.

edit:
Looking at your earlier pic again, I can see the differences in the stock design

Huh .... well there you go.

Like I said, this rifle makes more sense with a synthetic. Glad to see they changed it over.
Thanks for posting picture and clarifying.

My local shop has them on sale for $649. Thinking of picking one up even though I am left handed. Might be a fun bush/deer gun.

649 canadian? Good dealcompared to what they were going for. I wiukd like to handle the new revised model to see what else they fixed

I might pop in there today and see if I can take a look at one. Haven't seen anywhere left handed version offered by Mossberg though.

Well I put on my new LSS Chassis onto my MVP Patrol 308 it looks pretty sweet and feels so solid.

NICE !! Was just looking at the LSS Chassis not 5 minutes ago. Would love to see a Savage Hog Hunter in an LSS also.

Thanks for posting pic.

In December I narrowed my 2 rifles down to the MVP and Hog Hunter but opted for the time proven Savage design. As I don't hunt game I opted for .223 so I could get lots of varmint shooting in.

Anyways my point is with the hollow stock I added a bit of lead shot to balance it out and used expanding foam even and epoxied a rod into the front area under the free floated barrel. Even with a cheap poly stock it completely changed the feel and is more rigid.

I need much better glass (clone off my kids .22)and lower QD mounts (on the way) to get the optics lower so I can also take advantage of the heavy all metal beefy sights as well.

So have fun as I just love how these short beefy rifle designs feel. :)

Just getting started but looks like a tack driver even with the short beefy barrel. :)
