Hey everyone. Elk opened on tuesday up at home so I packed up my clan and hauled them back to Grandma's and Grandpa's. Opening morning I went out well before light and got settled in to a spot over looking our back hayfield. Once legal light came I saw a herd of Elk trying to get through our place to the neighbors where I don't have permission. As the title shows, I've had a tag in my pocket for the past 14 years. Maybe 5 minutes into opening day I got to whack this one at 200 yards with my Brno 21H 7x57.

Thanks to Blackwater and Rob for the rifle, it's my favorite! Also thanks to Eagleye for load ideas, williwagspal for the grandslam bullets and last but not least to Nugget for the help of hauling the beast out of the field.

Cheers,
Noel

Thanks guys. The hunting pressure is insane for Elk around home. I have looked elsewhere but to no avail. He's not the biggest but that's okay, I should get drawn out at the Ya Ha Tinda next year.
I heard through the grapevine a guy got a 7x7 out there that is over 400 net.

Noel, awesome pics and great story ... long wait but well worth it eh?! Cheers,

Hey Noel that is a very nice bull. And of course the choice of firearm is excellent!

I am obviously out of the loop here...what/where is Ya Ha Tinda?

The Ya Ha Tinda borders Banff National Park, every fall the Elk make their journey here for the winter. I believe it is Cree for prairie in the mountains. I have seen pictures of the Wapiti there, one herd of over a thousand head grazing like cattle.
I have lots of pictures of them too, but not that many. Some stay for the summer, others go back to the park to have their young.
The government owns a huge ranch there and use it for breaking and training ponies for the backcountry/park wardens.
I'll try to post a couple pics for you Kristian.

These pictures are from June guy's, good luck finding rams on this hill at all between mid July and November, hey wait that just happens to be when the seasons open.
This gives you the basic idea, it's a horribly boring place, I wouldn't recomend it at all.

Mommabear, if you like ranchin' an' a breakin' em hosses, well lil sister you best load up yer wagon an head west. Yer government needs your help out in these parts ta tame e'm poachers an such.

We camped out here when sheep season opened, it was cool to hear the wolves howling at dusk, and not so cool to hear all the unknown things going bump in the night around camp.

By gosh, I've curbed my own thread! oh well.

Dont forget to put in there that the Ya Ha Tinda is draw for elk during rifle season...very nice place, have spent many hrs riding there all the way to the park...you will have to hunt during the season to get an elk, there are a number of hunters/guides there.
