Doug, the little feller there is my son Reid(8 months), being propped up by my not-ready-for-a-camera-shot-but-still-beautiful-wife, :lol: , and my daughter Hannah who is just over two years old. I am afraid the "young lad" posing with the bull is me, did you have me pegged to being older? Maybe I come across that way. :lol:
As far as the 99 goes, I thought I had my brass supply all flanged up for the 38-55 but alas, the neck of the case was too thick, once the bullets were seated they wouldn't chamber in the old girl.
Maybe I can do you proud when deer season opens up.
By the way, the Brno isn't exactly what I would call real modern, while it is in great shape, it was also built in 1950. Not to mention being chambered in one of the oldest cartridges still in use(from 1800's IIRC) so I did my best to use a classic
"seasoned" rifle for the adventure. Don't worry, the only other one I have is a Husqvarna that was built in 57 or 58, so that is as modern as I can see me getting for a long long time. Might like to try a 300 H&H sometime too, should you swing out this way ever. :wink:
We had tenderloins a couple nights ago, and man are they gooooood!

Thanks aulrich, while I would have rather had a my 338-06 that morning, I believe I did just as well with the 7 mauser since I can shoot it better and am more comfortable with it. I guess I sold that gun too....
One of the boys at Russels told me how a guy went in there one day to trade in his 300 magnum for a 458 winchester. What for, well deer hunting of course! :shock:
The guy just couldn't topple a buck with the 300 so he needed more gun. These kind of guy's need to practice more for sure. :?
I will agree that I was close to the maximum limits, the bullet hit just behind the shoulder, knicked a rib , wreaked utter chaos with the lungs and stopped under the hide on the far side in a beautiful mushroom formation. A cow elk I shot with a 375 H&H had the exact same results but she was only 80 yards away! Unless I use something like a barnes or failsafe I don't think I could blow through the off side of an elk at 200 yards, but I have been wrong before....
I read once that no amount of caliber can make up for shooting around the edges.
So far that theory(within reasonable limits) has worked like a charm.

Like I posted before, I shot my biggest bull moose with a 7x57, and it was a 21H too! The range was around 200 yards and I used RWS 162gr factory ammo, which is loaded quite hot. Same shot; behind the shoulder and bullet recovered under off-side hide.

I do have my whitetail tag to fill, but I need something to have an excuse to romp around in the bush this fall.

I've never hunted in those parts. My friends son in law got a couple wolves around boggy lake last summer. The big black one filled the box of the truck like it was a whitetail. :shock: They were trying to chew on his cattle. A couple guy's from Bergen go out there all the time and have gotten some decent deer too.
Have yet to see any bears out that way though...
