I just added a sidesadle to my top folder 870. What do you think? Seems solid enough. Haven't shot with it yet.
I was able to replace my busted pistol grip thanks to the help of a forum member. :) The greyish hue of the PG complements the parkerized finish of the the folder nicely. They're usually pitch black.



















If anyone else with a top folder wanting to add a sidesaddle is interested, I have more extended screws and bushings needed to allow the stock to fold.

Very nice. Interesting flashlight mounting system, did you buy the wrong size ring?

How much did you have to move the side saddle out to clear the folding stock?

The flashlight mount is from Lite Mount technologies. Works great with any 1" bezel flashlights. The REM extension is also 1" in diameter. I've had this on the shotgun for some time and I know it works well. It may seem that you'd mess up your thumb when cycling the action, but I haven't yet. I really like it.

The gap needed between the saddle and the receiver to allow the stock to fold is less than 1/4". I used two 1/4" faucet seals in pairs for this. Thy are about 1/8" thick. I drilled out the centre of one set to accomodate the 1/4" screw.

Spacers - DUH!

Good idea to use spacers and longer cap screws to attach the sidesaddle. Using the Rem folding stock and a sidesaddle stumped me before, but it's so blindingly obvious and simple, I'm embarrased.

It looks like you added felt or velcro pile. What is that for?

Very, very nice. Love what you've done with the top folder and sidesaddle.
 
Thank you very much rdelliott. I haven't seen this combination before, so I thought I'd try it out.

The felt is what I use so the saddle doesn't scratch the receiver. Doesn't do much with the folder installed, but when the saddle contacts the receiver using a regular buttstock, it works quite well. I just have to keep an eye on it so the felt doesn't accumulate moisture in bad weather. So far so good.





I'm very curioius what others think of this set up. Please chime in guys.

I know the 870 police folder has been around for more than 25yrs, it looks upside down to me. The cheekrest should be the top of the U, not the sharp steel edges. Firing with the stock closed holding only pistol grip is a helluva whack on the hands; firing from the shoulder with the stock extended is a helluva whack on the face. Neither configuration gives the shooter any control or aim.
 
This is not my only shotgun. I prefer full stocks myself. I'm partial to the REM top folder because of its grip size and how it fits my hand so well. Also, its ergonomics work well for me. I like the way it compacts for travel in my duffle bag too.

Then, I like some of my toys for nothing more than the giggle factor.

I've never had a problem with recoil, or this stock cutting my face.... this is not the gun to have a solid cheek weld. I have shot it with the stock folded from the hip .... with both hands. Not enough to hurt my hand though.

My problem seems to be breaking/cracking the pistolgrip. I hope this one lasts a little longer. I might have to avoid 3" shells for that.

I had the exact same set up (except for the light).

My Pistol grip also went T.U. After 50 rounds of light trap loads the grip was a cracked around the stock pivot in several places.

There was still warranty left on the gun but try to get Remington to warranty a LE/Police firearm owned by a Civilian..................GOOD LUCK.:mad: Had to have the request on Dept. letterhead...........yea right.........

Ended up selling it off for parts...........

Part replication

That part could be replicated with some work but it is feasible. Easiest way could be to make a latex mold followed by a secondary cast in lost wax then finishing with a metal casting (Zamak or other).
Or simply inbedding a metal support for the axis in fiberglass and epoxy resin and layering a new handle from there.
I, for myself, would choose to shape out a new one from a block of aluminum alloy once the required holes for the pivot and the anchoring bolt drilled out; given some skill, one can fashion really good objects with an assortment of files and a few hours at hand.

Indeed it is a factory part. You don't see many of these swivels around these days.

Not long ago, I sold a swivel set (both for front and rear) made by UncleMikes that was the quick detach kind specifically made for these top folders. The style with the three ball bearings that lock into an inside groove instead of being cross bolted.

I too had the idea of casting, or maching this PG from aluminum. I don't want to just make a few for myself and I don't know if there's any interest from others to make it worth my while going the production way.
I like how the PG fits my hand and have a few other complete top folders on hand that I thought I'd install on other guns, but if I'm going to bust the grips off it shooting, and be conscious about heavy loads breaking the grips, what's the point.

I was told that PD's are switching to full stocks from these top folders, so THAT market is bust for me. I'm also not sure what king of patent issues I'd be crossing. REM doesn't make these any longer, but I'm sure they still hold the patent.

I've seen what PerversPepere has improvised as a sling attachment. I think that's awesome PP... and simple and ambidex. I like it.

If anyone has any suggestions/comments for this aluminum grip idea, please speak up.

I've been looking at this configuration for a while and it would not be difficult to fashion a mold for an urethane casting which would be inserted between the stock's twin arms and be retained by projecting tabs at the ends.
The block would just dome over the gap and overhang the arm's edges to avoid "spotweld marks" to the shooter's jaw.
There would be four cylindrical recesses under with annular bosses or longitudinal "fingers" to provide grip on four cartridges.
I'm presently cutting a wooden dummy to the exact dimensions and will ask one of my friends to make a casting mold from it.

That stock is correctly installed. Looks good. I am wondering where you got that center pin with the oval ring on it. (for the strap)

Here are the last drawings with dimensions. They are right smack in the middle of the tolerance range so you can err about .005 and it will still fit.
