Being my first build I was apprehensive to say the least - where to begin? Searching this forum, I quickly found someone that was anxious to help me out.

Ian, with Adams Lake Rifle barrels offered to help out in any way he could.
Ian gave me some direction that led me to his recommended gunsmith - Mick McPhee out of Kamloops, B.C.

I decided on a Kreiger barrel purchased from Ian with Adams Lake Rifle barrels. This 6mm barrel in S.S. was ordered fluted in a Heavy Palma with 1:8” twist. Barrel ordered with ~ 4 month wait time.

The foundation of the rifle build decided on was a Remington XR-100. This turned out to be a little more difficult than anticipated as Remington discontinued that particular rifle. Gunnutz aided here, as I was able to find a new XR-100 in .204 on the equipment exchange forum. I originally wanted a 22-250 so I wouldn't have to modify the bolt but beggars can't be choosers.

Deciding not to have the original .204 bolt face opened, I purchased a Remington bolt from Pacific Tool & Gauge. Ordered a milled fluted bolt with a Holland Tactical bolt handle. Due to U.S. shipping laws the bolt handle had to be shipped separate from the bolt.

After searching different forums, 6mmbr.com gave me some direction. The bolt and handle then made a journey to Fairbanks, Alaska where Dan at Accu-Tig did an excellent job welding it onto the bolt.

With lots of shooting done alone and wanting to use this build on smaller rodents, namely prairie gophers, I wanted a rifle brake installed. Having a spotter is considerably more enjoyable but seeing the picture show is not bad either. I ended up purchasing a brake from Nathan Dagley with Straight Shot Gunsmithing.

Months go by, barrel shows up and Ian had it delivered to Mick. Mick had scheduled me taking in consideration for the wait time on the barrel, so he was able to do his magic as soon as the barrel showed up. He chambered the barrel to 6BR, accurized the action; glass bedded, installed S.S. lug and made up a muzzle brake and cap.

It was during this time that I decided to add a jewel trigger as well. Purchased from Paul Reibin @ Range Sports in Kamloops, B.C. Mick installed trigger set at a 1 lb pull.

The only hickup to the whole build was the muzzle brake. The threads were made too loose so Mick kindly offered to make me one of his - nice job Mick!

Optics - Burris Black Diamond 4-16x50 with target turrets added from factory.

Birth Day – Oct. 12/09 Here she is in all her glory!

Big thanks to Ian Hames for his willingness to help out and of course to Mick McPhee for being so meticulous to detail- awesome job!

If Mick built it...it will shoot.

Great lookin rig.

I'm working on my 3rd XR-100 rig as we speak so I can attest to how great these are for a precision rifle.

Way to go man! It looks incredible, and thank you so much for your kind words!!! Have to agree that if Mick built it, it's gonna work. give those Berger 105 VLD's a go 10 thou into the lands and start with 30 of Varget. You will give experienced F-Class shooters a great deal to be nervous about!!

Regards,

Ian

I love the looks of it too. That stock sure is purty.

Is that the Boyds Varmint Thumbhole? I need one of those to replace the "stock" on my Rem 700 SPS.

You're darn right that's a nice looking rifle.....you gotta love that stock. You said that Mick made you another muzzle brake........I definitely need to see some pictures of that.

It is the standard Remington XR100 Rangemaster stock. Dimensionally the Boyds is near identical, but the Remmy is resin embedded.

Armorman, I finally had some time to get a couple pics of the brake - not the greatest pics as my camera has some issues. Mick designed the brake so the bottom has no vent holes to kick up dirt.

Damn nice looking rifle but hey, i'm pregidious. Ian and I also had similar rifles, as does jr.

RE 15 29.9 gr pushing 105 gr Lapuas, you'll love the load.

Good luck with the ground rats.

Mike

Mine and jr's at an O.R.A. Day

Range report

So I lost my virginity today:D First time shooting a 6BR and I'm in love!

The following are the parameters of the test group shots.
5 degrees celcius
5 km wind
Shooting virgin brass
Shooting off bags
There is definite room for improvement:
Fire formed brass
Adjusting jewel trigger for lighter pull
Fine tuning loads

What do the experts think of my first groupings?
LFTYR's

I think the groups show significant promise, but I would definitely try a berger 105 VLD or a 107 Sierra. They will shine in your barrel! Get them up to about 2875 an have fun!!
