Figured I'd share my fall hunting story and a few pics. On November 7th I harvested this muley while hunting for elk. It was my 12th day out looking for wapiti. The area is a really sweet spot for mule deer as well. I had seen 3 other 4x4's and about a dozen does before I found this fella. The shot was 150yd's broadside. I shot him with my Sako 338 win.:)

On November 20th I connected with this whitetail. The bucks where heavy in the rut (it was my 25th day hunting for elk). My buddy and I where on a ridge and he was in the valley bottom on the edge of a stand of poplars cruising for does. I was again packin my 338 and took him with one shot broadside at 240yds.:)

By now I had been looking for that elusive bull for about 30 days. I had seen plenty of elk ( as well as many days with no sign of em) over that period but never had a good shot at a bull. I was starting to think it just wasn't meant to be this year. We had seen cat as well as grizz tracks in the area over the past month.
On saturday Nov 25th my (elk) luck took a turn for the better. It was -22 C in the morning when I headed out. Shortly after getting into the hunting area a buddy of mine spotted about 30 elk crossing a frozen slough about 1000 yds out ( it was still pretty dark out). I lifted my binos for a look and the group had several bulls in it. We made a stalk on them and ended up splitting up after we lost sight of them in the willows. This took close to an hour and finally I came into an opening before the timber started to a group of 12 bulls. There was one 6x6 and a half dozen 5x5's in the group as well as smaller bulls. They where tightly grouped together and getting ready to head out of sight into the timber. As luck would have it the 6x6 decided to head in first and distanced himself from the group enough for a clean broadside shot. I dropped him with one 225gr TBBC from my 338. I was pretty happy:D (to say the least).:D My buddy also shot one of the fivers about 10 minutes later further down the line.

I purchased the rifle from the exchange forum this spring and a real nice swaro scope to top it off with from Ted ( Thanks man). :)

Way to go Gregg! Dustin and Cody said you had been neglecting your Horse Training duties but I didn't know it was to that extent! You are dedicated I will give you that! I wish I had that kind of fortitude!
There sure seems to be a trick to catching the Elk in their "circuit", glad it payed off for you in the end. Congrats and great job!

I thought you'd have the STW out for the prowl.;)

I really wanted to shoot a bull with the 338 win, so the STW sorta got benched.:) . He dropped like a sack of potatoes from the 225gr's.:D

You either:

a)are not married
b)have a wife who hunts as well
c)have a wife who REALLY likes elk meat
d)have a wife who REALLY likes you away from the house

Hate to say it, but my wife would string me up if I hunted for 30 days.

What's the secret ElkMan?

Nice animals by the way.

Yeah Elk man. What's the secret? If you are married. I hope your wife has a sister you can hook me up with. LOL. Looks like you had an awsome hunt! Congrats!

Dave.

LOL. My wife had a good chuckle reading this :) She came with me for a few days and most of the time I was home for dinner in the evening. She is from Europe and I told her that this is normal in Canada and that every man does it...we have to...it's our duty.:):):)

LOL! Right on man, you best get Her behind the trigger so she can give you a run for the money!

I'm going to try pulling "It's because of my Norweigan Heritage" on my Danish wife, this may just work!:dancingbanana: :p

Christy's going for her cow moose next fall Gregg, what's your bride going for! :p

Oooopss, pardon my ignorance for forgetting to congradulate you elkman. I also am fortunate to have such a supporting wife. She, in fact has been known to go out and catch and trailer the horses while I was getting the rest of my sh$t together. Cool and very well done, pictures are awesome.
