This was my first draw Elk hunt. My dad was successful the year before so I decided to tag along with some friends from church who knew the area.

After a day of seeing no sign, pushing bush with nothing exiting, and being taunted with several big moose seen well within 50 yards we decided to set up down wind on an alfalfa field and wait.
With a half an hour left in shooting time we witnessed 3 cows and a calf come out from the trees. As I crawled out of the grass into the clearing with my Norc M305 and ranged them at 250 yards. We decided that I would shoot the first cow and my partner would shoot the 2nd. We waited till they stood broad side and let em have it. I heard a noticeable thud after my bullet craked and watched as the elk started to run directly at us due to the echo from the trees. My cow stood broad side again to me at 100 yards where I was able to hit her one more time which finished her off. I was using 150gr. Winchester Power Max Bonded bullets. The other cow dropped right beside mine. When we approached we found both cows within 2 feet of eachother on the ground.

We cleaned them under the full moon light while we waited for our ride. I didn't have my camera with me so I only have pictures of the next morning as I skinned my animal.

The fully expanded bullet found under the skin. My first shot was high in the chest which pierced the lungs. My 2nd shot pierced the heart.

She dressed out at 329 lbs and we think she's around 2 1/2 years. The butcher cut and trimmed the tenderloin out and the rest will be made into steaks, roasts and sausage.

Thanks for looking and best of luck in yor 2010 season.

Good job on the elk. In the future try to get the animal skinned as soon as possible. This will allow the heat to leave the animal faster and you will have less chance of meat spoiling.

I was late for a supper appointment with my wife so I just hung the cow and took off. It would have been easier to skin it when it was still warm but it did get to -5 last night.

Here's another pic. This was how they lay after we had shot them. Photo taken from an ipod touch.

If it is nice and cool, there is no problem with leaving the hide on. I have done so many, many times with no negative results. Congrats on a successful hunt! Eagleye.

I was using my Norinco M305 with 150 gr. Winchester Power Max in .308. I was hoping to use my dad's S&W .30-06 but we were having trouble sighting it in. Plus using a semi auto helped.
I fried up some tenderloin last night and it was perfect. Too bad my wife doesn't eat wild meat, I guess that means there's more for me.

I was hunting in zone 42 for you Sask boys. Land was posted but we got permission from the owner. I don't think steaks would last in the mail. Might just have to stop by for a visit.

Hey Jay, Still training. Looking forward to meeting up again.

- Next we're planning some wild boar hunting in the area. Pictures of the hog hunt will be added.

Cheers,

Nice , that thing is huge , way to go .

Just on another note though you mentioned 3 cows and a calf ? this may seem like a stupid comment but tell me the calf wasnt near newborn or shortly after .. that doesnt seem ethical to me is all , which is why i ask .
